Guest Andrea
Anyone had this fish before? I had some for the first time tonight. This is hands down the VERY BEST fish I have ever eaten. We grilled it after we soaked it Italian dressing and seasoned it with Tony Cacheres and lemon pepper. If you can get this in your area...don't pass it up. It's fabulous. To me they are better than crappie and catfish. Here's what they are: http://ag.arizona.edu/azaqua/ata.html
RangerClay
Tilapia is a very mild fish and very good to eat. It is a fish that can be easily raised in farm ponds and is very cheap to produce. You will see more of these in stores in the future. HUNTINGMAN
I had it one time and thought it was a good tasteing fish,I am not much on eating fish unless it is cat fish but it was good. Now with that said,I will never eat it again after watchin the episode of dirty jobs that they showed how these fish were raised to sell.If I had not seen it I would not have beleived it,they raise them in sewage treatment tanks with some other type of bass and then sell them to be eaten by unknowingly folks. Hoosierbuck
MMMMMM, tasty! A lot of "farm raised fish" are raised in floating pens in the ocean. Salmon are that way, often. Tilapia is also good "blackened" in a cast-iron skillet. Just dip fillet in butter and then roll it in seasonings and then cook it in the skillet which has ben heated up pretty hot. You will like that! HB
muggs
Yeah, it's really good...they look and taste like a big bluegill, or bream if you will.
Guest Andrea
I just wonder how you catch them. They are in the lakes down in central and southern Fl. I've never heard them living wild up around where I live. I hear they're easier to bow hunt and catch with a cast net. But hard as heck to catch with a rod and reel. Guest Andrea
They are not tolerant of cold weather. Friend of ours had some in a pond and when it got below freezing they were all floating on the top.

oldksnarc
Yeah, it's really good...they look and taste like a big bluegill, or bream if you will. By that I take it to mean it's a firmer fleshed fish? I like that much better than the softer fish.
oldksnarc
My father-in-law used to catch them in the Salton Sea (southern California) when he visited my brother-in-law in San Diego. Said they were the best fish he ever had.

Doesn't fall apart easily. Baked some in the oven tonight with Italian dressing and some butter.

We bought ours in a 10 pound box. They were individually vacuumed sealed too. 3-5 oz filets. 10 pounds was $19.90. Wal-MArt was selling a 4 pound box for $10. LifeNRA
Whose poop and WHY? I caught the last 10 minutes of the show, it was the ten most disgusting shows on Dirty Jobs. Tilapia was on there! They showed the concrete tank that they raise them in, and how they push a metal grate from one side to the other to get them out. The host said about all the poop he was walking in while pushing this grate! LOL! He also mentioned at the end while he was eating some about the poop they feed them! LMBO!!!
Guest Andrea
Well you if think about it..............no matter what fish you eat.....it's probably consumed something you don't wanna know about. Heck, most folks eat fish that eat...of all things.......WORMS. Or slugs or bugs or maggots or caterpillars. And basically, I don't really care if tilapia eats poop. That's the best tastin fish I've ever eaten!!
LifeNRA
I never said it wasn't good! Heck I just found out myself! LOL! Look what snow geese eat, when the farmer throws down a nice manure bed in his field! LMBO!!!! Never a short of them hunters taking them home! I have taken many a crappie, perch, and bluegill home for the table! I know what they eat! Still tasted great!
