maddhunter
All henned up around here boys. Been gobbling their heads off but won't come in. We did have a good tom come in after using a gobble call, it was just like on TV. I hit the call and he answered in stride. The only bad thing was he didn't cross the creek where we thought he would and he came in behind us. I tried to Cole (son) repositioned to get a shot but since we didn't have a tom or jake decoy out he came saw and left before we could get turned around to get a shot without spooking him. Heard a few more birds on public land Mon. but they were also henned up. We've got on birds 5 different times, all times of the day and they always had hens with them. I guess this cold weather we've been haveing has them hanging on to those eggs until it gets warmer. We had an awesome time though. This next weekend I will have three days to hunt so hopefully I can score on a good tom!!!!! Good Luck !!!!!!!!!

Hope you get him man!! I guess that is what i'm going to do. Honestly have never cared for hunting that way. May actually try it with my bow, though i havent shot since January. Bowtech_archer07
Not a big fan of ambushing them either, but one of my buddies did that with his brother last year.. They knew this longbeard's pattern, went and sat up, no dekes or anything, no calling or anything, big boy walked by, he shot... 10 in. beard, and I believe 1 in. ivory tipped spurs. rhine16
Well I'll hopefully try to persuade my uncle or my dad to go after that bird Sat morn and the other and me go after the ole boy that won't come.

jm23494
You guys are making it even harder to stay at work. The weather is finally starting to warm up a little here in PA, but we still have a little over 2 weeks until our season opens.
Bowtech_archer07
Rhine, i'm up at school right now, and my season doesn't come in until a week from Saturday. But my dad and a friend went out last night to put up a blind and heard 6 on the roost. 1 or 2 answered a crow call. Our friend's season starts Monday, then dad and I start hunting the 18th. If we don't do any good there, my next season starts May 8 and runs about a week. Since i'll be done with school for the year, i'll have the whole season to hunt!!! rhine16
Dang you're lucky. I'm stuck at school too, so i only get to hunt the weekends. Season goes out the weekend before exams There are a few public land spots within a short drive of here, but I dont really have a hunting partner so I havent tried it out. Should have a few next year. Currently trying to get dosse to go out there with me. Maybe next week
Bowtech_archer07
We have 5 seasons here.. you have to have a permit to hunt. Our friend drew 1st and 4th season. Dad and I drew 2nd and 5th. 5th season comes in the day i'm done with final exams!! It happened that way last year and I harvested that longbeard in my picture that weekend after finals. rhine16
Gosh that would be awesome to be able to hunt every morning of season. I'm jealous! How long does it last?
Bowtech_archer07
A week.. Last year was the 1st time i'd been able to do it.. and I killed out on Sunday. I only started drawing 2 permits last year because since i'd gotten into college, I knew at worst, i'd have 5 days to hunt and at best i'd get done w/ finals early and have the whole season to hunt. Last year and this year, I've been done with finals on the 1st day of the season, so I miss the first day, but can hunt the next 6.
rhine16
I guess I'd rather take my 6 weekends over just 6 days in a row. Cant ever tell what the weather is going to do, plus you work a bird 2 or 3 days and he'll figure you out. 4 or 5 days with no pressure can do a lot of tricks
punkinslinger
Just checking in....was in Florida for a week. The second day there we were traveling on the outskirts of town and across the road from a busy mall in a field was a big old tom and his girls...I just about jumped out of the car to try and get him to gobble but the wife would not stop along a 4 lane!!!!! Bowtech_archer07
Pretty cool punkin. Rhine I agree with you, but it's in May, so the weather is usually pretty good. Also, I have about 4 or 5 places to hunt during 5th season. The place where I killed my bird last year, the birds are only on that land for about 2 days. They travel from the land to north thru the property I hunt to the south. So it's nice having 6 days to hunt because they make that trip in about a week, so usually I can get on them during that season.
rhine16
No bird again. Saturday had a bird gobbling his head off! We setup in a field we thought he'd come to and waited since he was off our land. Came onto our land and my dad went to where he was. My dad backed off him because the turkey was about 50 yards up in the woods from the field my uncle and i were. For some reason, the ole gobbler and his hens decided not to come in the field. My dad got back on him. Got within 60 yards. Said beard was 8-10 inches. Sunday morning was cold but clear. Absolutely no gobbling heard off roost. Heard a bird at 7:10 gobble 5 times in about 2 minutes. He never sounded off again.
3whunt
Checkin in.... I had several close encounters this week, but couldn't close the deal. Seems like the toms still have several hens with them at all times. It should get better in a week or two. I may give the Rios a try this weekend, maybe they will work a little better. Bowtech_archer07
That's awesome that you guys had close encounters. I'll be out there Saturday and Sunday before I have to head back up to school for 3 weeks then i'm back at em for the last week of the season. It's supposed to be about 65 or 70 degrees this weekend. Hopefully the rain holds off and the birds will work good. Rhine sorry you couldn't that longbeard to work right. Hopefully you can get on him next weekend!! rhine16
Rhine sorry you couldn't that longbeard to work right. Hopefully you can get on him next weekend!! I sure hope i can! Have only two weekends left, and I'm in a big softball tourney this weekend. I imagine I'll be able to hunt Sunday morning though. Had 2 other birds gobbling just off our property line Saturday also, so maybe one of them will move in.

BTW- My uncle just called and said he saw the "gay" bird out in the field we've been seeing him in. Same field we hunted Saturday and Sunday and he never showed. Talked with some friends who did some scouting last Saturday, they had a couple birds gobbling their heads off all morning. Hopefully they'll be there in two weeks.
