good luck in texas..... there is alot of us from around here.....maybe we can all hook up sometime this season.......

That sounds like a plan, bring your four wheelers too:) We live full time here in Rockland county 3R and have another house in Sullivan county 3H. We( my 3 sons and I) are up to the house almost every weekend.

Well, if we want to hunt anything it has to be before the end of March. The only thing open is crow and coyote now.

May starts spring turkey, then nothing til October to hunt.

We could just get together to BBQ, ride and shoot our bows/guns.

2 week notice of most weekends is fine by me.

When does everyone hunt or when does your season start and when are you going to hunt? Mine starts on the 7th of April. I'm taking the week off work and hopefully I'll get my first spring gobbler with a bow. Last year I hit one but couldn't find it. My Illinois permit is good for 5 days, if I don't get a bird with a bow then I'll have to break out the smoke stick.

Illinois only allows hunting until noon as well.

In addition the state has a lottery for (resident and non-resident) permits. Although there are five 5-day seasons (spanning the month of april) one can only apply for one permit for one county in the first lottery. After that your chances are not great for getting additional permits for some counties. There have been years I was denied a spring turkey permit.

I hate to say it, but the spring turkey seasons and regulations in Illinois pretty much suck as far I'm concerned.

In contrast: the fall archery season is much better. However, I'm too busy chasing whitetails in the fall. I generally purchase a fall permit (just in case), but I've yet to take a fall turkey with my bow.

Stiff turkey hunting regulations may be necessary in IL????? but they sure make it difficult for hunters to acquire the passion.

In Illinois we get to hunt till 1:00pm. I think the lottery was good in Illinois when a turkey was hard to find, now there every where. I hate that the state tells me where to hunt and when. there are turkeys on three different properties that i hunt on and i can never get the permits that i need to hunt those properties. i think its time for the state to start issuing a multi bird permit much like the fall archery tag(state wide). the biggest problem is the first lottery. do i apply for a special hunt area or a private area? if i get the special hunt than the counties i want to hunt are all gone in the second draw.which i must exclude my self because i have a permit from the first draw according to the (state) rules. sorry to rant, but i cant hunt where i want to.

Thanks everyone. It was a blast.

What an incredible time we had. The best turkey hunting I have ever done has been with my oldest son doing the calling. He has called me in birds and has done the same for himself alone too!. Good birds also!

Just to be with Joe in another state, with friends and hunting!

Who cares if we got anything? ( I really don't mean that:eek::D).

Yeah I do mean that;). The sheds/skulls we found and the arrowheads too alone made the trip special. I am working on my Texas friend to get on up to NY to hunt some Easterns with us. Show him what it is like not to see 30' into the woods, let alone 30 miles! Have that gobbler pop right on out at at 5 yards from the thick....Ohhh! I can't wait until our May season. We are primed for sure here.

Thanks for the clarification willfish03, I probably never would not have double checked. You just gave me an extra hour. We'll see if it pays off.

I hear and share your frustration with the way IL handles the spring permits. As you mentioned, I too see a lot more birds these days than I ever have before. There's a large flock of about 20 birds I see in a field 1 out of 3 mornings on my way to work.

Hey Adjam5, thanks for sharing the story. The pics were great! I have a 5 year old son and 6 year old daughter. I hope in the future I'll have similar hunting stories to share that I have experienced with my kids. It's what it's all about ya know.

I'm so psyched for turkey season. I'll be doing alot of hunting with my bow out of my Ameristep Brickhouse. I'll probably have a new bow by May too so that's even more exciting. Can't wait til I hear that first gobble of the year. For the last weekend in April, we get to take out my younger brother for the NY Youth Hunt. Only he gets to carry a gun. We can only assist in the calling. I have a spot picked out already that holds birds every year that we should be able to get him a tom at.

I will be up at our camp this weekend, liming my apple trees and maybe tilling/fertilizing a small plot.

I Just serviced all the fluids in my Kodiak, put on a winch and back up it goes to camp, it needs tires:rolleyes:. I will be on the lookout for turkey during my weekend crow hunts. I'll check in with my farmer neighbor if he has been hearing gobbles in the AM, and I can't forget to bring the .22mag...the groundhogs should be showing up too:D.

I also hope to finish reading my 3rd Ishi book. Ishi's Brain; This mans life was amazing.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Anthony

Update...

I saw a flock of at least 20 birds. The Toms were strutting but were quiet. Nice beards on the ones I saw. They were across the road from an area I have access to. Thats good news.

I also nailed a few crows this weekend and enjoyed a weekend at our hunting house.
