270wsm OR 7mm Mag?

I am looking for yet another new toy to finish up the rifle collection. I am having a hard time deciding on the caliber though. I am looking at either the 270 WSM or the 7mm Mag. I already have

22LR-Ruger 10-22, Simmons 8 pt 3x9x40

.223-DPMS Carbine, peep sights

25.06-Tikka T3 Hunter, Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40

30.06-Remington 1917, Bushnell Banner 3x9x40

30-30-Marlin 336W, Stock Marlin 3x9x32

300 Win Mag-Mossberg 4x4, Nikon Buckmaster 3x9x40

.50 cal CVA Optima ML, TruGlow sights

Which caliber would be the most versitile for deer, bear, etc. I will be hunting out west in the coming years, and just basically looking for another toy. Any expectations on either of the 2 calibers? Once I have the caliber picked, then I will start narrowing the search down to the rifle brand, thank you in advance, Eric

You've already got it...... 30-06 and 300 mag.

If you're looking for a new challenge why not think 338 or 375..........that's the next slot you need to fill, you've got the mediums about covered.

+1

Even the .338 would be pretty redundant, already having the .300 Win.

Never reallt thought about bigger....Hmmm, the wheels are turning! The bestr part is I am going TDY to a school for a month, and if I live not too high and mighty, I can finally get that Ruger wheel gun I have been drooling over. If my wife ever looks in either of the gun cabinets, I am gonna be toast!!!! I appreciate the help though, the smaller calibers I will be looking at when my son starts shooting with me in a few years.

Oh yeah, the 30.06 was an heirloom firearm from my father and is now retired to the cabinet and occasional range session to loosen the cobwebs.

-Would you consider a .270 in a WSM?....I think that might fit your need just right, especially because you mentioned something to take and hunt out west...

-Check out the specs on this new Sako mod. A-7 site....I was impressed...(this was brought up in a thread by someone a couple of months ago.....that's how I was told about it).-Price is surprisingly not too bad, either!

not really a ballistics man but my prefference would be the 270!!I already have one in the mossberg 4x4 and man that thing can reach out and touch ya!!!I have recently been getting into the ballistics though!!In my opinion the two calibers are somewhat comparible but would still go with the 270!!

....can someone that knows their ballistics fill us in on the difference in these two??

You can compare factory loads here Dave http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/. Just select the calibers and it will give you the options of loads available and you can then compare them. With like loads, the two are pretty close in performance, but there are more factory loads available from what I have seen in the 7mm mag.

[i am looking for yet another new toy to finish up the rifle collection/QUOTE]

That's wishfull thinking, I am the type that thinks if I get that ______ rifle , it'll be the last one and I will have everything I need.:) Wrong!

I just ordered my 5th rifle this year alone:rolleyes: and already thinking on what to get next. I have all bases covered but just can not do without new and different things.

By the looks of what you already have, the .338's would be next in power wise. The remington ultra mag, winchester's and the Lapua come to mind.
