NYBowhunter71
I am considering going to an outfitter near me. They list a bunch of references. What are some of the things would you ask the references?
snapper
I wouldn't put to much stock into references...the outfitter usally only uses names of folks who they know will say only good things. Usally guys that got lucky enough to harvest or became good friends with the outfitter. If you still wish to contact them...I'd ask things that are important to you...such as maybe kind of stands, locations of stands, how many hunters hunted the same stand etc... May also ask about guides, how hard did they try, were they friendly and seem knowledgable. Can't leave out the lodging...how many hunters in a room, food good and enough? Just think about the kind of questions you'd ask the outfitter him/herself and ask the references the same type of questions. Good luck. fly
Number one problem I had with the only outfitter I have used was communication. I would ask questions and get vague answers. The outfitter sat at the lodge all day while the guides did all the work. Therefore many questions could really only be answered by the guides. I was in Canada and the guides did not speak English wery well. In addition I could never find the guides and when I did they were always in a hurry and didn't take the time to make sure my questions were answered. It made for a lousy experience overall. Dubie
I've never used an outfitter...I tried once for bear, but every last one of them was scared that since I was local, I'd go back to thier spots over and over without paying... Rhino
I agree with snapper. Another thing to ask is how many hunters they take in camp at the same time. You don't want to show up and find there's 60 hunters in camp. Sit down and write a list of every thing you can think of to ask. Take a week or so to keep adding more questions to the list. Chances are you will think of more things to add to it after you 1st make a list.
huntinguide
Thats kindof a hard thing its all personal preference. All our business is word of mouth, we dont advertise in shows that much or use alot of paper. I would try to go somewhere that someone you personall know hasbeen or someone they know. Use the infrmation from them to get your final answer.
