johnf
I was looking at a Remington 770 Monday at a local pawn shop because I've been thinking about getting a bolt gun. All my riffles except my 336 are NEF's. I pulled the bolt back and it got really wobbly at the end (last 2.5" or so)and it felt very "plasticky" if that's a word. Is this something with the 770's or did I just pick up a gun that was worn out?
wtnhunt
My honest advice to you would be to get a 700 John. The 770 is not a 700, but is more like the 710. For no more than what they cost in adl's if you can find them new, it would be worth it.
johnf
I'm not really shopping hard for one yet, but it was there so I thought I would check it out. Do they make the 700 in a youth model. I find full length guns a little to long for me. I would probibly get a 270 or 308 if they were offered in a youth platform. Might go to remingtons sight and request a catalog http://www.remington.com/literature_request/login/login.aspx?url=http://www.remington.com/literature_request/literature_request_form.aspx. wtnhunt
Pretty sure chamberings used to be offered in .308 for youth model rifles John, but looks like now they are offering a 7mm-08.
toddyboman
I agree....Spend the extra bucks and get a 700....much better gun IMO

Don't really want another 7mm-08, not that they aren't good, I would just rather have a 308. Maybe I can find a good used one somewhere. What is the differences in the demetions of a youth gun? Is it just the stock and length of pull, or is it the whole gun? Could I just get a regular gun and have it cut down?
bluelund79
From what I have read, the difference between full size and youth is all that you listed. The barrel is normally 2" shorter on a youth model for overall stability. I would also say to shy away from the 770, it may be prices nice, but from the ones I handled before I shelled out some extra cash for another brand, they really didn't feel too well, and went as far as to chamber some rounds and wow is all I can say about how bad it was. While the gun may work for some people, I would say pass on that rifle.

Typically the length of pull, length of barrel, and weight will all be lesser in the youth model rifles. Go to the remington website John, here is a link to the youth firearms http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/youth/. Another option to consider is the model 7. In bolt guns, might also consider a savage model 10 youth, it is offered in a .308, here is a link http://www.savagearms.com/10GY.htm and might also check this one if you want a synthetic stock http://www.savagearms.com/11FYCAK.htm
davetucker
my wife (who doesn't know alot about rifle's)bought me a 30-06 when i was wanting one about 3 yrs ago for christmas.God bless her soul, like i said she doesn't know alot about rifle's(except how to put smackdown on deer)and she went to wal-mart and boughtme the 710 rem. in 30-06.I honestly thought to myself that i wasn't going to like the rifle. To my suprise it shoots a better group and feels more comfortable in my shoulder, and the trigger is alot smoother.I've got the encore in 270,243,i got the pro hunter in 45-70 and 300,i got another 270 in mossberg 4x4,i got a rem.700 in 308,well anyways got quite a few rifles and i would shooy my 710 anyday that i needed to.I choose my 270 more for deer and i like the ballistic.I think i take a different gun everyday i hunt.I would stay away from that pawn shop jobie my bolt isn't like that. For the money you could get a good new one.I'm sure you know get the gun that fits you most!! wtnhunt
Just so happens I have a few remington catalogs laying around:rolleyes:. I did a little looking and looks like last year the model 700 youth rifles were still offered in the .308 chambering. So there is probalby a pretty good chance you would be able to find a new model 700 youth in .308 somewhere John:cool:.
