preacherman
Why is it that so many things take place of church? Let me explain myself......... We live in a town where athletics and sporting events take top priority over most everything else in town. You go to a football game, or a basketball game, or a baseball game, or even the little league field during the summer and you will usually see the entire community at these events. I think that it is a great thing that so many people support their community and support their children; but why do things like this often take top priority over church. For instance, we have a guy in our church that is a deacon and over our men's ministry. Tonight we are having a big men's ministry night at church. I get a call just a few minutes ago, that this man is going to be the school's baseball game that was moved to tonight because of rain. So, the big "men's ministry" night that he is over and in charge of, now goes on without the leader being there. Please don't misunderstand me, I am not knocking anyone for supporting the community or children; but I just don't understand why that people allow things like this to be first place in their life. It is frustrating to me, as a Pastor, to try to do special things at church........knowing that you might have a big group of people gone on a given Sunday or Wednesday, because of sporting events. Can someone give me some encouraging words, or something! Because in the long run of ministry, it ultimately all falls back on my shoulders, being the Pastor of the church! aksheephuntress
.....Maybe it just slips up on people, and other things become the focal point.....before they know it? : Maybe this is part of what is called the "spirit of confusion"?-I don't know.... .....It helps us when we are reminded what should be priority in life.-Thanks for posting this. (and I hope the situation you are frustrated about ,gets better!).take care, Kathleen
ybronco
Hey Preacherman those are tough things to work through. The way our church has set things up is that our pastor attends functions because he wants to in other words if something falls apart it isn't on his shoulders in any way we also have a mens ministry team of four men that run it so we have flexability for the unforseen. "I heard a story one sunday morning about a man who went to the local church demanding to see the pastor. He was told the pastor was just leaving for the day he would need to make an appointment. Needless to say he was angry, right then the pastor steps out of his office to leave for the day when the man tells him about the help he needs to fix all his family problems. The pastor calmly said he was heading to his son's ball game but could see him tomorrow to discuss it and left." I'll be praying for you that don't become over loaded with extra things. johnf
Because we allow it to. I refuse to have after school anything on Wed. night because of Church. If parents would stand up to their ungodly coaches (who probably are a member of some church) and tell them their kid won't be there then maybe they wouldn't be scheduling things across from church. That baseball game was god for him tonight. Plain and simple. But you already knew that.
Missilelock
Im with John on the ball game being his God on that nite.we cant underestimate the enemy. whatever our passions are other than Jesus, he will be digging in hard right there. Sometimes we all need reminded in a spirit of love what our priorities are.
buckee
I think it's got everything to do, with priorities and commitment to your own agreements with others. Letting your yes's be yes's, and your no's be no's
davetucker
i think it has all to do with the new age world(not the book) the world itself and it's teachings!!NO prayer in school, take the word god out of the pledge of allegiance. The world has been on a pth of self destruction for the past 30 yrs.And yet we still can't see it happen!!May god have mercy on our souls. johnf
When we were going to church in Texas, on our way to Sunday school we would see hundreds of kids out on the soccer practice fields at 9:AM on Sunday mornings. We have truly become a society that does not value God anymore. I remember as a kid you couldn't even buy gas in my hometown on Sunday. Now it's just another day. Church is just another social meeting to some people, and God is just another thing to take up our time.
Dubie
Guilty. I often miss church due to work. And sometimes when I'm not working, I feel like just sleeping in. Or maybe just going out into the woods or hitting the lake. I have my own ways of connecting with and understanding God independant from the church (not that I never go, its just not always a priority in my mind). I suppose to me, church is just one of many spiritual tools out there, but the whole world is God's house, and you can find him every day if you just slow down a little and open your eyes. unioncountyslayer
Scott, I feel your frustration. One possible solution for the future could be this. Our church requires a minimum of 2 leaders for every ministry. This way, if somethings comes up in one of leaders lives or schedules, there is always someone else there to pick up the slack, so-to-speak. I know this doesn't relieve the frustration of church taking a back seat to other things, but it puts a plan in motion. Hang in there brotha... Guest elknut
I've discovered that if I put God first no matter what it looks like everything else falls into place!!!
