How High to Hang a Treestand?

I say it depends. I want to be high enough that I have cover from the tree, but low enough I'm still aiming at deer and not ants...If I can set my stand up at 10 feet and have good cover, great. If not, I'll go to twenty. Usualy I won't go higher then that, though I have from time to time with guns.

I would say the average is probably 15-20 feet, but the answer is how comfortable you are at a height. If you do not feel comfortable above 15 feet do not go over it. Good luck and Welcome to the forums.

Well said!

I recently (07 season) started extreme height bowhunting. I get 30-35 feet high. Check out this article from Game and Fish:

I usually put my hangons at 15 ft b/c that is all the longer my ladders are. It doesn't matter how high you are, heck you can be on the ground and take deer. Get high enough where you can see well and you are hidden enough from the deer to conceal your movements.

I must be part monkey beacuse i like to stay at 30 feet or more if i can. I keep 30 feet ropes on all my stands . I like the bottom of my cam on my bow just off the ground . I admit sometimes it's hard to always get that height . I settle for lese some times on my setups but never lese than 20 to 25 feet . I know i've shot deer at less than 10 but I fell like a sore thumb sticking out with more hight i can get by with a lot more wind and movement .

i would have to agree with 15 - 20 ft. i don't think most people realize how far up 20 ft is. 25-30 ft in the air is a long ways up. higher than any normal 2 story house by a ways.

Good post.

In all honesty, I have only been above 22-25ft a few times. As mike said, it's a longer way up than most guys realize. I base where I place my stand on what I see as I walk in, expected travel corridors, and the straightness of the trees available. I don't hunt "really" high partly because I think it is many times unnecessary, and because it creates a more severe angle of entry which can lend itself to lost animals due to the minimized margin of error.

it all depends on how comfortable you are with heights. if you are comfortable i believe you should hunt no less then 20 feet. i believe in being anywhere from 20 to 30 feet if you do this and you're in a decent area i guarentee your success rate will be higher then if you hunted at 10 or 15 feet as long as you're in a good spot where the deer are. the only time i hunt less then 20 feet is if im gun hunting some big open woods or a field but if i have my bow or if im hunting a well traveled trail or somewhere where my shot is only going to be a 20 or 30 yard shot i make sure that im up at least 20 feet.

I hunt a lot of field edges and just inside the woods where I see crossings or staging areas that lead from one field to another. I have personally seen deer travel right against the edge of a field for a safe retreat especially where there are homes nearby. I try to get as high as possible or just above a canopy where I can see them but they can't see me. I love to hunt high. The higher the better for me or until I look down and go, "Whoa!". I always measure my height by the length of my pull up rope. It's twenty feet and my rope is usually attached to the top part of my climber and I just figure that if my bow is dangling off the ground then that's 20 feet. I usually survey my surroundings and if I feel like a sore thumb then I go higher or lower depending on what's immediately around me. Usually I go higher to clear lower limbs at longer ranges. I guess I just like a good view without being viewed or smelled for that matter. Good luck and go with what you feel comfortable with. Practice during the summer to alleviate the vertigo of your early season climbs. I know it usually takes at least about 4 or 5 times before I get comfortable. I always wear my vest and strap up before I ever pull my bow up.
