GPS

I've been thinking about buying a GPS, anyone have any recommendations? I've been looking at the Garmin Etrex line, I like the looks of the Vista HCX and the Legend. Also was looking at the Magellan Explorist line too, anyone have any experiences with any of these units? Dad has an Etrex, but it's the cheapest one with the least amount of options, it works ok but like I said, it's a very plain model.

I currently own the Garmin GPSMAP 60 CSx. I love it, works under heavy tree cover, I have three states of topo's in it, and even have the window mount to use it in the car!

If you get any of the Etrex Garmin line, make sure you have one with the HCx! This is the high sensitivity antenna!

Glad you asked the question. I'll probibly either be hunting public land again next year or a 5000 acre lease if I can talk my wife into the dues. It would be nice to be able to scout and find my spots when I need to.

I'm looking for one too. Do you have to spend a lot of money to get one with topo?

Right now Garmin has a lot of their GPS's at a reduced price, last years units. When the GPSMAP 60 CSx came out it was running about $400-$500. I got mine for $300, which I had a $50 rebate from Garmin. I ordered mine from walmart on line. The topo's come from a program called Mapsource. That program runs about $100. I am quite pleased with my unit, I wouldn't be affraid to take that anywhere!

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend Cx, and love it. My recommendations are that you get a color screen and also removable memory cards (Micro SD cards). Don't waste your money buying lower kb memory cards from gps companies, check some place like buy.com for them. Most of the time you can pick up a 1 or 2 GB for less than $25. Having these cards and the Topo maps program allows you to add or remove what areas you want to view on the unit with just the click of a mouse. The map program comes on a DVD that installs on your computer and allows you to view and load the entire U.S.

If I had the money though I would have a Garmin 60 CSx.

I ended up getting a Magellan Triton 400, it's got the colour screen, removable SD cards. Reception is great, picture is great, very accurate so far! I have the Ontario topo map on it, gives all lake names, street names and elevations on it. It even shows where there's "hazardous navigation" spots are on the lakes to show rocks, shoals etc. You downlaod a program called VantagePoint and you can plug your GPS into the computer, look at the topo map, create waypoints, routes etc on the computer and upload them to your GPS. Works great! Very impressed so far. ;)
