Mississippi Hunting Help

Hey y'all... I am college student from Minnesota looking to take a trip to MS for spring break with my room mate. My break starts March 15th, and instead of going to the beach like most I would rather be hunting a MS longbeard. I was wondering if anyone from MS had any advice as far as public hunting land goes. Additionally how hard is it to get permission from landowners to hunt on private land. How are the birds acting right now... is there much gobbling activity right now? I would appreciate any help, thanks!

You can check out www.mdwfp.com for public hunting land. I don't hunt public land much, so I don't have much advice. If you come down during the first few weeks of season, you'll find a lot of hunters in the woods on public land though. I live in the southern part of the state, and you'll have a very hard time finding private landowners willing to let you hunt their property. Most people either hunt or have family or friends that hunt their land. The northern part of the state might be better as far as that goes due to the number of farmers, but it won't compare to the possibilities you'll find in say Texas. There seems to be a lot of turkey activity all across the state. The gobblers are really starting to get cranked up.

Hey Boss, Supermag said it right. You can go to the MDWFP website and check out all the WMA’s that we have( Some are draw only for the first two weeks so you will want to check on that before you drive up on that WMA and find out it is a draw only. (gas is too high for that.). We also have some large Nat. Forest that have good hunting. You won’t be alone, you cannot imagine the people that will be out (mostly on the weekends except for a lot of out of Staters that camp out for the first week or so until their season starts) Not trying to detour you away from a great trip though, I can almost guarantee that you will hear birds most every morning if the weather is right, but there is no telling how many people will be hunting that same bird. I’m not joking when I was in college at MS State we went during the middle of the week and there was 31 trucks on one access road. (1.5miles long) You can find some places to yourself. It is best to locate a few birds in the early morning and go after them if you are alone if not go after them at around 10:00 when most people are going home. PM me and Ill be glad to give you a few options on some above average places to hunt.

As far as private land access; it will be tough if not impossible to get permission. But like I’ve always said “All they can do is tell you no. You’ll never know if you don’t ask."

Good luck and let us know how you do.
