chromage
I didn't have any thoughts of steelhead fishing in Michigan this spring break. I was more thinking of sitting on a nice beach somewhere south enjoying the sunshine. Then problems came for me, so I started thinking kentucky with friends fishing for muskie. That also didn't happen so I started thinking steelhead fishing in Ohio in steelhead alley. We were all set to go but when I made a call to erie outfitters they told me it was a waste of time. Good to know there are some honest tackle stores out there still. Well, after 650 miles on the truck, 130 dollars in gas gone, I am back in school. I did it again, steelhead fished my spring break away. However, it actually turned out pretty good. Thursday my buddy and I floated a favorite little river of ours. Spotting our vehicles were close to impossible since at one of the launches I got my truck stuck. We thought for sure our dry floy boat would be gone when we got back. Ended up fishing from 9:30 til dark with the fishing getting better by the day. Hit many holes with very fish to show for it. However, it didn't matter to me being that I haven't fished in months for steel. My buddy went 1-2 and lost a hog hen. Waxies were the bait of choice for him. Later in the float I hit a small chromer but that was it for the float. Since it was still pretty early, I decided to continue to fish and ended up going 3-4. Nothing huge but still felt pretty good to hit some fish. The fish I did loose was a hog of a hen. She probably only went 25-27 inches long but was easily 10 lbs. The fastest fish I had ever seen. Would of been nice landing her since I am in desperate need of spawn. All my fish fell to a jig and brown trout spawn...Thanks Jon for the spawn!! Did see a king that looked to be dead for about 2 weeks. Headed farther north to fish another favorite river of mine. Fished from 1:30 to dark. Did alot of scouting and learning some new water. Found one fish but it spit the hook near shore. That was the only fish I seen hooked all day. Caught on a white jig tipped with chartruese and BT spawn. Headed furthur north to see my buddies new born, and hit another river. Had to give Joseph his scooby doo fishing rod for when he is a little older Fishing was slow for the majority of the day with me hitting only one fish in my fav. hole and loosing it. Seen a carcass of something floating by but I am not sure what it was. I think it might of been another salmon but could have been a brown. Also seen a pair of fish spawning. Couldn't believe it since the water was only like 32 deg. Ended up going to a spot I knew produced for a buddy early this week. First cast a 20 inch buck. Second cast, nothing. third cast a 6-7 lb male. I didn't think there were anymore fish. When I casted I noticed my reel was all freezed up. Right when I got it set and drag adjusted, the float went down and I was into another fish. Landed that fish and it was probably 8-9 lbs. Thinking i was into the money hole I covered every little piece of water but never hooked up. With my gloves completely frozen and my waiders starting to freeze I called it a day. Headed out sunday with temps finally rising. Met up with UBSLO1. While he was coming down I hooked onto a fish tight in the inside seem. Glad to see it was a hen I through it on the bank. When I got home, I cleaned the fish and it only had a few eggs in her. :x Here she is: I ended up hooking and loosing another bright fish. UB and I worked all the good holes but I conected with another fish but my drag was to loose and I lost that fish. Ended up being a great day on the river. Here are some pics of UB and I. Me going to work: UB Nice fishing with you again, Noah! All in all, from what I thought was going to be a sloooooow wkd turned out not to be that bad. It was a cold weekend but I made the best out of it. Now to find some more money so I can do it all over again

chromage
Don't get me wrong, I love steelhead fishing. However, I can do that 50% of the year. There is only one week for spring break to hang out with friends. Next year, I am going south for sure. Of coarse there will be a fishing trip in there somewhere. muggs
Yup, the rivers haven't really been fishable here for some time. Now we have about 26" of snow that is going to melt soon and blow them back up to flood stage...but that should settle out right in time with the major spawning run. I'm going to be elbow deep in steelhead in a few short weeks I would say. I'll post some pics.
