Try to make a tube call. You should be able to find this a web site. I know all you need is a film container and some latex a long with some rubber bands. elnor
I saw your reply that you're interested in making a slate, but here are some very straightforward tube call instructions for a backup plan: http://www.nwtf.org/tv_magazines/images/GITG_Tube_Call.pdf

BAMABUCKS
Like elnor is saying, the tube call would be the easiest call to make & the nwtf website will give you step by step instructions to do it. BUT...I believe you may want to stick with your first choice of a slate call. I know it will be more dificult to build, but will be easier to play when complete. The tube call has to be one of the most difficult calls to master. My point...why build it if you can't use it...it make affect your grade. Just my 2 cents. Is that the length of your "Presentation" of the How-To... or the length of time it takes for you to make the call?
redkneck
i dont see why it wouldnt work with a bit of sanding to get a good texture to it.

Your best bet would be to use the antler for the striker top and drill it for a hardwood dowel of some variety. I belive you'll get better performance this way than by playing the call directly with the antler. This should be pretty easy to do.
