Re: Scent Lock

I have one of the older style under garment suits. Just plain tan in color. Hood and all. I went in the woods believing I was 100% invisable to a deers nose until I became educated to the properties of activated carbon, the material used to trap scent.

I guess it all depends on how you look at it.

Activated carbon works, but maybe to good if there can be such a thing! Meaning, it absorbs scent like crazy! IE: as soon as its manufactured it starts absorbing scent, on the store shelve, etc. etc.

Ok so by the time you actually get to use it its almost or completely "full" and needs to be reactivated. No problem.

However the little known fact about this is that activated carbon needs like 1700* F in an oxygen free enviroment to reactivate.

A commond household or industrial dryer is like 200* F at best. And is full of oxygen too.

Hense are we reactivating or not...??? Thats the big question.

Ok so they also say, wash in a specific detergent to aid in reactivation.

So why can't we do the same thing with our water or air carbon filled filters? Not possible thats why. Once wet it gets even more clogged up. Only extreme heat and oxygen free enviroments can reactivate carbon. These suits are almost a one time use item.......

So do as you wish, but I have been really paying attention to deer both in and out of the stuff. I see very little or no difference.

Now going along with that statement I will say I shower and brush my teeth before my hutns, hang my hunting clothes outside all season long, and in general do a lot of scent elimination things along with wearing my suits.

I also use carbon blast. Which in my opinion meets all the requirements for activated carbon to work. One time use, manufactured, shipped and sold in an air tight container. The carbon in that product does not encounter scent until sprayed on your clothing. It will suck the scent from your clothes as well as draw in scent from it new enviroment.

Just my 2 cents.

P.S. I did not post this to re-debate the effectiveness of these suits. If you think they work. Use them. I will use mine since I have it. I will not buy anymore...... For those of you who have not gone threw this debate do a search on this topic and look for my posts that will include a link to some very interesting info on activated carbon.

Re: Scent Lock

These suits and a lot of the other gadgets and gimmicks on the market remind me of the joke about the guy who ran around the state waving his hat in the air to scare off the elephants. When he was told by someone that there were no elephants in the state, he replies,"See...it's working isn't it?". Most of these products have absolutely no way of proving that they do or don't work. You only have the word of the guy who's trying to make his million dollars off them. While this sort of gullibility is very good for the economy (and my retirement portfoilio), nothing beats just plain old "good hunting techniques".

Re: Scent Lock

I agree with keeping yourself scent free as possible, but if the wind is wrong, you are busted. I don't hunt out of a scent-lok suit, it's just more money to spend on something I don't need. As long as I stay warm and keep my wits about where I'm hunting and setting up at, I'll keep killing deer without a suit. Just my two cents. grin.gif

Re: Scent Lock

Hi Guys!!!

I have a Scent Blocker suit and like it. It is not 100% ... play the wind.

As far as no proof. My Scent Blocker suit had a "scratch & sniff" tag attached to it when I bought it. Scratch the paper and it smelled like garlic .... you then placed a swatch of the fabric over the paper and the garlic smell disappeared (100%). I was sold and impressed.

Just my thoughts

Good Luck to all

Re: Scent Lock

I kinda did the same thing but with Carbon Blast. I had an old dingey, musty smelling bulap bag i had thrown away from a down stairs closet. It smelled bad. I sprayed the Carbon Blast on it and I could not smell a thing. I mean nothing! I put my nose right on it too.

It sold me on the effectiveness of that product. I use it in conjuntion to all my other scent elimination techniques, to include my under garment scent blocker suit, hood, and gloves.

Re: Scent Lock

first time user this year, and i'm convinced it helps.

i still take scent free showers, and use fresh earth scent as a cover scent, but every time i wore my scentblocker jump suit and had deer down wind of me, they never spooked. never. i've had plenty of deer do the same thing in years past, but sometimes you can tell they smell you. they may not blow, but they'll put the ears back and stiff leg it out of there, or stick the noses up. they just didn't do that this year. one time (i posted about it back in october) i was straight up wind of a doe, while on the ground, at about 7 yards. she had no clue i was there until i let down my bow. i just decided not to shoot her.

it's worth the investment IMHO

watch Cabela's, my jump suit only cost me $89 shocked.gif
