Well everyone, I finally head into surgery on Thursday for my knee. I will be having my meniscus cartilage either repaired or partially removed. Not something a 21 year old wants to have happen.

The injury happened back in November of 06 and after 2 doctors finally found one that will do something for me! I injured it deer hunting, running on chisle plowed feilds and must have stepped on a clump and twisted it wrong. Wish me luck as there is a chance I will be on crutches for 6 weeks which means out of work at the police department. The doctor is only thinking about a week so I'm hoping that!

Hope you pulled through! Just take it easy...you don't want to ruin it.

What did they end up doing? With meniscus, it depends what area as one part has more blood flow and does better but the other part not so much blood flow and does poorly healing. But from what I've heard, knees are alot better after surgery

I go in on Thursday Turkeygirl so I will let you know what they end up doing! The first doctor I saw said it should heal with me being so young, but it didn't so after a cortisone shot and him saying "well there's nothing else I can do except shoot you up with cortisone again" I decided I needed a second opinion. Hopefully they will only need to take out a small portion of the cartilage like the second doctor says. The first doctor said the tear was more toward the middle which would mean a repair, but who knows! Guess they will find out when they get in there. I won't know if I'll be on crutches for a couple days, or for 6 weeks, until i wake up after surgery.

Not to worry, you should recover quickly. I would be amazed if you are on crutches very long. I have a friend who recently had a medial tear repaired and he was back to work in two days. His job as a pharmacist isn't very strenuous but one week after surgery he had minimal bruising and pain. Whether they do a repair or a meniscectomy the prognosis is excellent. It is a shame you could not have had it done sooner as the results tend to be somewhat better if done within the first couple of months. A positive attitude can make the difference. Hang in there.

Well, surgery went well. It took about 2 1/2 hours for surgery and recovery. I'm home resting now. I do not need to use crutches so that was a good thing to hear. The doctor cleaned out a bunch of inflammed tissue and some cartilage. He said give it a few days and I will be walking fine and can take the bandaging off.
