beagleboy
I don't go turkey hunting without an owl hooter for the early morning locator and a crow call.
Ambuscher
I use a peacock, because it's not something they hear everyday.
bluelund79
If you hunt public land, turkeys get real quiet when the same old locator calls are used. I look at what the local sporting goods store sell, and stay away from it as I hunt public where I live. I've found that my predator screamers work great when my older crow fails a response. As for the owl hooter, use your voice as only you and the turkeys will hear you Hopefully! Best advice is be different from the other folks that hunt the area. Ethan Givan
An owl hooter or a crow call are commonly used as locator calls but I like to use something different like a goose, hawk, or coyote call. Even a gobbling call can get other gobblers to shock gobble. There are lots of choices out there.
The Kid
you have to have an owl hooter, thats essential,, umm my uncle has a screaming hawk call its not the whistle but its actually a tube call. whatever you get you want to get a call that is loud and has a sharp sound to it.. Nut
Lots of options have been given. Hope you make the best choice for your area. Where I hunt my locater call has stayed in my vest. The crows are aplenty and if they do not caw...the cows moo:D
joetex25
A couple of questions for you "more experienced hunters": the area I hunt will periodically have quite a few crows cruising the area. I would assume that the gobblers become less responsive to crow calls when there is an abundance of real crows consistantly in the area. What have others experienced? Next: In reference to hawk calls, do they appear to work any better at a certain period of the day than during other times of the day? And if there were crows frequently in your area that the gobblers might have become more accustomed to, did the hawk call work better then? Finally: concerning peacock calls. Do these calls work (consistantly) in areas that do not have peacocks, where you rely on the shrill sound? Thanks guys/gals. Your input is greatly appreciated!! HUNT SAFELY!! Strut10
99% of the time my locator call is a turkey call. I never use a locator in the morning before the birds start gobbling. I let them go on their own. I generally know within a tree or two where they are anyhow. So I'm already where I want to be at first gobble. All I need to do is a little fine adjustment to my location for setup. After flydown, I do my locating with my turkey calls. I carry a crow call, usually. But I'd bet it's got cobwebs in it. buckbuster11
Crow call is all I ever use, and it's pretty rare I even break that out of the vest. I have an owl hooter too, but I bet I haven't even tried that in 3 years. I pretty much agree with Don here, I let the birds go off on there own in the morning. If I am really desparate I'll try the crow call later in the morning if the situation calls for it, but usually I stick with the turkey calls. huntinguide
theyll gobble to anything here, duck, goose, cow, chicken, car door, gun shot, anything..
wtnhunt
Usually use my box call here, but have been really tempted to get a goose call for locating birds. Seems these birds around here gobble their heads off when the honkers are flying over.
Strut10
theyll gobble to anything here, duck, goose, cow, chicken, car door, gun shot, anything.. I've found that cows and car doors get awfully heavy after you've carried them up about the third Pennsylvania hill. That's why I'll stick to crow & turkey calls.
