philray
My Dad and father in-law swear by using pure vanilla as a cover sent. They say that it not only covers their sent, but it will attract deer. I am very sceptical, but have seen them spray it all over themselves and still kill nice deer. Are they just lucky or does it really work? Have any of you heard about this or have tried it?
johnf
I think any natural scent that the deer are used to smelling can be used as a cover scent. I know people who smoke their clothes, some that store them in ceder others roll around in the dirt or their barn floors:eek:. I use either the HS scent fresh earth scent or wear my scent lok suit. Vanilla is a sweet natural scent. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Have used vanilla as a curiosity scent and it does attract deer for sure. You still have to use your regular scent precautions though as it will not rid the human odors and act so much as a "cover scent".
MUDRUNNER
I've heard from a few people that vanilla attracts deer, but never tried it myself.I've never smelled anything like vanilla in the woods and I usually just use cover scents that are natural in the area I hunt.Fresh earth and coon pee are about it for me.It would be interseting to put a trail cam up by a bottle and see what happens. Tominator
I don't use any cover scents except for a few earth scent wafers in my clothes tote.
Guest surveycheif
i heard you need to mix 1oz of pure vanilla and 2oz of anise oil and 1 tablespoon of peanut butter for the best results and i am going to try it

spineshot
The cover scent i use depends on the area I am hunting. If i am near acorns, some acorn cover scent wafers. Most of the time I just use the earth scent wafer. Good to smell like dirt. Also spray down with scent remover and wash clothes in the same scent remover detergent. backwoods07
We put Vanilla in front of our trail cams every time we set em up. It seems to bring them right in front of the cam and set them up for a nice, pretty picture. We might use it as an attractant in our stands, but we don't rely on it to cover our scent. Guest deerchica
I have a side business in bath and body stuff. Although I dont make it, some others make a soap with dirt fragrance oil and sell a lot of it. I have heard of using anise, but I thought that was more for fishing. Our family just uses the store bought scent killer spray, soaps and laundry detergents.
High Country
I try to stay as scent free as possible...shower, wash clothes in scent killing soaps, etc. and then play the wind carefully. However, when I first started hunting seriously, my father put me onto his favorite cover scent...SKUNK. I came up with lots of logical arguments against it, but it worked. I have never had a deer scent me while wearing it (sadly, I have not been able to find any for several years). I have even had a doe (down-wind) walk up and lick the end of my rifle barrel (she didn't seem to like the taste of gun oil, but she did not spook either). Of course, I have an uncle (who limits out every year, generally with large bucks) who always showers, shaves, and splashes on his BRUTE aftershave before hunting. He "claims" the deer come right to him. Have not tried it yet!
LifeNRA
Vanilla is a sweet natural scent. I don't see why it wouldn't work. I never see vanilla growing where I hunt. Since deer are so curious, I am sure it works. But I wont use it on my person. Ill stick to my Scent-A-Way soaps and such. I don't use any cover scents except for a few earth scent wafers in my clothes tote. That too and earth scent spray earth scent wafer's and use the wind when i can to my advantaged What he said.
