Guest Heter32
If I have a long walk ahead of me on opening day is it ok to use a light to get into the woods like I do for deer?
Ambuscher
We can't for deer or turkey around here. No light of any kind in the woods.
buckbuster11
If I have a long walk ahead of me on opening day is it ok to use a light to get into the woods like I do for deer? Simply put.....yes. You'll probably want to kill it if you know you are getting real close to where birds are roosting, but even then I have walked right under roosted birds with a flashlight and not spooked them. As long as it's not to close to daylight and you are careful where you are shining it you'll be fine.
HUNTINGMAN
Keep it pinted to the ground and I think you will be ok,I dont go in the woods without one where I hunt because of so many snakes.
Ethan Givan
I dont usually use a light on our farm because I know where im going in the dark, but on other properties that I hunt I use a headlamp. It has a red colored light that animals are not supposed to be able to see, but I still turn it off when I get close to a roosted bird. Griz
I use a Streamlight when I'm out Turkey Hunting. The one that I have puts out a Green Light and I haven't had any problems with spooking game. It looks like this... http://www.streamlight-flashlights.com/65069.html

Turkeygirl
I use a headlamp...nice because it frees up your hands...and I try to kill it or block most of it with my hands when I get near to where I'm setting up
wtnhunt
When I do use the flashlight(mini mag light), it is pointed directly at the ground, and usually cover it so that it does not put out much light.
maytom
I use a Streamlight as well, but it clips to my hat, making it a hands free walk in!! The green light doesn't spook game like a standard light will. Here's a link showing the very model I'm talking about. http://www.wingsupply.com/shop/Scripts/prodViewSKU.asp?SKU=6110
pointing_dogs_rule
TIP: I use a mag light. Just take a red felt marker and color the lens red. By doing this you do not cast a beam. The only part illuminated is the spot the red light shines on (such as the ground). I do believe that a white light scares or alerts them. the dog
HUNTINGMAN
Bought a streamlight stylus and man is this thing bright for such a little light, going to carry this during turkey season this year.
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I try not to use a light if at all possible. Turkey eyesight is much different than a nearly colorblind deer. Think about it this way how many colors does a tom turkey have. To be sure red is a very dominate color on the head of a tom as is white and blue. Now why would a tom turkey have these colors if other turkeys could not see that color. These colors pretty much cover the light spectrum so I feel that a turkey would see white light and red light whereas a deer may not see the red. I most times do have a light with me to signal the other guy that is also out there stumbling around in the dark.
wtnhunt
Have often kind of wondered how well turkeys really see in the dark. Guessing their night time vision is not nearly as good as a deer.

Ditto!!! I guess that's why they roost in tree's as well, instead of on the ground.
bluelund79
If I do have to use a light, I like my headlamp to keep my hands free. It has a red led lens also to keep to amount of light to a minimum...I keep a small streamlight in my pocket as a backup...Try gettign your night vision before you depart your vehicle and slow down on your way in. You would be surprised at really how well you can see in the dark if you take your time.
