the one
This day started out just like any other day I arose from bed and checked the weather report. This was on Wednesday Oct. 30, 2007. The weather report was calling for a sharp drop in the tempter this weekend. I thought to myself that tomorrow would be a good day to sit in the stand. But there was a problem with that plan. My boss was losing his patience with me our seasons in Georgia started on September the 8th I had already taken off or left early every Friday since the 8th of September. All day I was try to come up with every excuse in the book to tell him that I needed Friday off. All I could think of was hunting I called my hunting partner William and asked him if he was going to hunt his property in town. He told me that he was planning to hunt it tomorrow. I said that would be great. This would allow me to hunt without having to miss a day of work. I would not have to drive a hundred miles to our lease just outside of Augusta Ga. I could hunt ten miles outside of the city. I live in Atlanta Ga. OK with that problem solved there was just one more thing that I had not thought about until later in our conversation. My tree stands, climber and lock on stands were at the camp. Just then I remember that Dicks was having a sale. Without having any kind of stands on hand this was all I needed to justify buying a new stand. See my wife is also feed up with me she has already told me that if she sees one more package from sportsman’s guide that she was going to cancel our internet connection. So off I went to Dicks the area were I wanted to hunt was overlooking a creek bottom with no suitable trees for a ladder stand or climber. I have wanted to try those rapid rails or something along that line. Once at Dicks I brought a lock on stand and one set of rails I was ready. Last season William and I in earnest had cleared an opening to an area were I had wanted to hunt. I had only hunted it once that year. I had seen a doe that evening coming up from the creek bottom. But she also spotted me while I was trying to come to full draw. As I stated early this location was not suitable for a climber at that time that was all I had. I could not wait to hang my new set up. It has been over a year since I hunted in this area and I did not know if I would be able to access the area where I wanted to hunt. Thursday finally arrived and sure enough the tempter had fallen. I called William and asked him if we were still on for or evening hunting. He assured me that we were all I could think of was hunting this was one of the longest day of the year I could not wait until 3:30. I called William at 3:30 no answer I left him a massage on the recorder. I arrived at his aunt house and he still had not returned my call. WhenI pulled into the drive way his uncle was sitting in one of the rocking chairs that he had created Yes I said created you should see this thing. Well we started talking and I asked him if he had seen any deer. He told me two just walked by not an hour ago. I just looked at him and said to myself he just pulling my leg. But that all I need to hear to jump start my fire. You could have not asked for a better day to be in the woods the days prior to today be hot and humid. By know the cold front was starting to set in with overcast and the temp dropped 20 degrees. I cut our conversation short and changed into my hunting gear and grab my new set up and headed into the woods. To my surprised the path was still visible to my hunting location. I was heading to the same tree that I hunted last year at the base at the tree I noticed a fresh scrape. I backed off and surveyed the area and picked a tree just in side of the wood line on the opposite side of the wood line just inside the wood line perfect I said to myself. With the rapid rails I was able to nestle into that tree like a bird nest. It took some time needless to say but I managed. After settling into the tree I said to myself there is no way I am going to see any deer with all the noise I just made. I said that I would set here for a little while and catch my breath and come back tomorrow to hunt. After sitting for an hour or so I got lost in time. The day was just lovely the clouds were playing peek-a-boo with the sun. By this time William was returning my call I did not answer my cell. I waited for it to go to my voice mail and then I retrieve the massage. William said that he was tied up with a client and would not be able to make it but don’t let that stop me go on in. At that moment I spotted movement under my stand relax it was only a rabbit. As I watch the rabbit I could not help but think about the wonders of our creator. I gave thanks for all of the blessing that he has stored upon me and my family. On October 5 of this year my first grand son was born. I then asked him if he could see fit to let me share in his wonderful creation long enough to pass my passion of hunting to my grandson. At that moment I looked to my left and there he stood no not the creator but Mister Big just standing there looking down towards the creek bottom right inside of the wood line checking his scrape . Everything went into over drive there he was a big wide 8 pointer standing to my left the only problem was that I shoot left handed so I was out of position for the shoot. All I could do was just watch him and let him make his move instead of tacking the chance of spooking him. The week prior to this I was in the same situation a buck hade came in just under my stand. I tried to stand up and turn around for the shoot and my paints snagged the seat of my climber and well you know the rest of the story that was all she wrote. I watch the 8 pointer as he surveyed the area for a while then lowered his head and picked up and started to eat on an acorn. Then he took two steps forward that put an oak tree between him and me. That allowed me to stand to my feet. Ok I was in position for the shoot. I was thinking that if he took two or three steps to the left or right he will be in my shooting lane. Just don’t head back into the woods then all of the sudden he spooked and jumped back into the wood line. My heart skipped a beat as he just stood there looking down towards the creek bottom. Know I am thinking is there another deer coming up from the creek bottom because if there is I am busted. In standing up to gain position on the wide 8 pointer I have exposed myself to any deer coming up from the creek bottom. I slowly turn my head to see if any deer were coming up from the creek bottom I did not see any deer. But I did notice a shift in the wind. I just know I was busted, and then he raised his head and sniffed the air and curled his top lip and then lowered his head to the ground and picked up two more acorns. I remembered just before getting into my stand I placed some tinks number 69 just below my set up. Thing were know falling into place. All I needed for him to do was to follow the trail leading to the creek bottom. If he decided to take the trail leading over the horizon I would loss the magnificent specimen of a deer. The plan was working to perfection. Then for no apparent reason he changed course. The only thing I could do was aim for the opposite side shoulder. That meant that I would have to shoot between two small trees before he crossed over the horizon. The light was fading fast I took aim and squeezed the trigger I heard the arrow hit. The beast dropped his head and tucked its tail and ran off. I felt good about the shoot do to his body language. I hit the beast at 6:30pm then I started to second guess my arrow placement. I set in my stand till 8:00pm during that time I decided that I was not going to try to receive the buck tonight. I just wanted to retrieve my arrow and see one of two things a blood socked arrow or no arrow at all. I thought if the arrow was covered with blood that would confirm a good hit. Or if I could not locate my arrow that the hit was marginal and the arrow was lodged inside the buck. I would leave the animal and let the rage broad head take effect. I climbed down from my stand and located my arrow and it was covered with both dark and light colored blood. I return William called and told him of the encounter that I just had he wanted to look for the buck that evening. I told him that I wanted to wait until tomorrow morning. I went home and told my wife of the event that hade tacking place that evening and tried to sleep. The next morning I called my boss and told him that I would be in a little late for work I assured him that I would be there. His asked if I had a deer in the woods that I needed to look for I asked how you knew. I picked up William and we drove to his aunt house and headed to the location where I shoot the buck. We walked the area looking for any sign of blood or broken branches. We were unable to locate any sings my heart started beating then I dropped to one knee and started looking around about half way in my turn I spotted BONE there he was. He only went 40 yards. When we pulled him out of the thicket that’s when we seen the damage of the rage broad head. The shoot was far back and I do mean far back. It entered into the buck hind quarter and exited on the opposite side exiting the rib cage

Guest dihardhunter
Awesome story and buck. That rage did the number on him. I killed one with a similar shot a couple of years back. Hate to hit em' like that, but sometimes it does work out.
wtnhunt
Sorry to hear that i will not be able to enter the BIG DEER contest for the up coming year. That's OK I will still enjoy keeping track of the contest Think maybe there is a misunderstanding there. Last year the post count minimum for entering was only 50 posts, so you are about half way there in just a short time and have plenty of time left. Should not be any problem with you being eligible for the contest in the upcoming year so long as you continue posting like you have been.
