Should I Get This Buck Re-Mounted

My dad killed this buck back in 1965 in Ritchie County,WV. It was just sitting up in their spare bedroom floor, so I decided it was too nice a buck not to be displayed, so I decided to put it on my wall. It was his best buck ever and he is no longer able to hunt now after a series of strokes. He told me that the guy that originally did the mount was just starting out and the work was ok but it is now showing its age. That brings me to my question, should I have it remounted or do you think it will take away from the bucks history? All opinions are welcomed

I'd remount it just for Dad to look at. That would be the least that I would do for him escpecially if he couldn't hunt again. Just my opinion.

My same thoughts.A new cape and a little work cleaning up the antlers and that thing will look great.Sweet buck specially from W.V.

Go for it,I would.

Think about your dad and what he would really want.

I know my dad has an old 6-pointer from the 60's that doesn't look that great. However, I think if I had it re-mounted he would be a little sad.

It's amazing what people can associate things to. An old flame and a particular song, or an old car and the good times they had with their friends.

I remember seeing an episode of the Wonder Years. Kevins father knew his old car needed to be replaced, but he hatted seeing it go.

Then again, maybe your dad would appreciate the gesture?

yes I would remount it....YOu know the day your dad shot him he looked great and well he doesn't look so great now:o....and he SHOULD!! He is obviously a very special trophy to your dad and now you too.;):)

Just my .02. :)

Your choice. Think I would probably get another cape and have it remounted too though.

Yep! Get him looking like the day he shot it!:cool::cool:;););):cool::cool:

OK, I'm going to be brutally honest, hope you're not offended, but that thing looks like something out of a Looney Tunes cartoon.

Yes, by all means, either stick it in the attic or remount it. There's no way that deer looked that bad when your dad killed it. I think the rack and your dad deserve better.

....I agree with Flyera, and with sskybnd.....according with your Dad's wishes...but, I am assuming you have already asked him-

......some things, like modifying the stock/etc. on a great rifle would affect the asthetics and collector value on it....

-but, this is different...take Tominator's advice; honor the buck, and your father, and get it properly mounted(and using a different cape ....it's done all the time...that would do wonders in this case).

-We have the same thing facing us....although, we have no hesitation to get this done- just a matter of finding the time, arranging for it to be done....A friend of TC's mounted his first dall sheep for him, one of the guy's first taxi attempts....it is a 3/4 curl, was legal at that time in that area up north...and he would like to have it re-done...also, wood smoke has stained the cape ....

-Good luck!....I think this is a great thing you are doing for your Dad!

-Happy Easter:)

OK..I may be a minority in this discussion, but hear me out. If that was my Dad's best buck, and he was satisfied to display that very mount since 1965, I would look at it as a family heirloom, and not give a crap what others thought. There is a story behind that mount that you have shared with us, and I wouldn't want to have it any differently. Ask your Dad if you really want to change that deer, but seems your Dad never "really wanted to change it"... so why not leave it the way he gave it to you? Haven't you ever been in a Rod and Gun club or a hunting camp that has 50 years of history and see similiar mounts? They all have a story behind them. If you put a new cape on that buck, it will just look ,like any other deer that was harvested in the last few years.

definitely remount with a shoulder mount, looks only like a neck mount in the pic. Your dad will enjoy looking at the new one alot better then that one. I can't imagine that is how he wants to remember that deer looking like that. It takes away from the great rack b/c the mount looks so awful. It will look awesome redone, and you guys will be proud to display it

I agree with swampy to a degree, but dang. I'm wandering if he used bad materials on that thing and it's gotten worse over the years. If so maybe your dad would want it redone. I've got a mount that was done for me 2 years ago of a very nice 9 pt and my first buck ever. He was a 4.5 year old deer with a huge neck and very mature looking facial features. I got it back from the taxi and he had mounted it on what looked like a 2.5 year old doe form. I was pretty irritated. Now if my kids took that deer and had it mounted the way it was supposed to have looked in the first place I would be tickled pink. (that's good for down south)
