Backyard Bucks

Well, for the last couple weeks it has been really cold here , and the deer are herding up on food as much as possible. My parents and I have fed deer in our backyard for about 10 years. Although this year with it being -50 C with the windchill, the amount of deer overall and particularly bucks has been crazy. The bucks come in every night just before dark. 1 160" 6x6, 2 150" 5x5's, a few smaller 120- 130" class bucks and some spikes. Its absolutely unreal. We had no deer showing up until it got cold, and all of the sudden... boom. deer. No bucks have shed yet here, but goes to show you how deer concentrate on food when it's cold. One thing to consider while looking for sheds.

Re: Backyard Bucks

Yeah, the main reason we feed the deer in our backyard is to have fun watching them. Its really neat. If we find sheds even better. With the weather being so cold, and 1 1/2 to 2 feet of snow, feeding 10 or so deer in the backyard isnt a problem as far as conservation and herd management goes. It helps these deer get through the winter, and provides a fun family activity to look for the sheds in the spring. And oh yeah, that 160" 6x6 i told you about shed his left antler 2 days ago. It scored 72 3/8. And he still has right antler on 2 days later. My dad saw him at 5 in the morning and that antler was still hangin on. It would be pretty cool to find the other antler from that guy after he drops it. I'll update when he drops it.
