007hunter
I'm thinking about trying a do it yourself rifle hunt for Antelope in Wyoming next year. I've never been out west and have just started re-searching it. From what I've read, non-residents have a better chance of drawing in area where there is a more private land than public. I'd prefer to stay on public land but I also want a good chance at getting a tag. So whats a good area that has both a decent amout of public land and that I also have a good chance at getting a tag in? Also if possible, if the area could be in the north-eastern part of state. texastrophies
I can't help you with the area, but I would suggest that you purchase a pref. point this year, that will increase your odds of being drawn next year. They become available on July 1.
Guest dihardhunter
Check out my blog post on my signature link titled 'WY DIY'. Can find it in the archives. A bunch of people have already used it as their starting place for planning a WY combo hunt. Good luck. PM me if you need any more info
stevebeilgard
find the town near where you want to hunt. contact the chamber of commerce or game & fish, and get a list of ranchers who allow hunting, and free maps of all the blm land. then, apply for a license in that area. elnor
I strongly second texastrophies' suggestion that you purchase a Wyoming antelope preference point in July. They're cheap ($30 this year I believe) and will give you better odds when you're ready to apply for a tag in 2009. Concerning areas: I've found the information in Eastmans Hunting Journal's Members Research Supplement invaluable for researching areas to hunt. In fact the Feb/Mar 2008 issue has details on applying for antelope in Wyoming and including a set of "grades" based on tropy potential and public access available in each unit. I would highly recommend that if you can get a copy of that issue with the MRS in it; even if you can't, I'd recommend subscribing so you'll get next year's MRS issue covering Wyoming pronghorn units.
