johnf
Wal-Mart is carrying a Mossberg ATR 100 bolt action rifle. It only comes in 270 and 30-06 and cost under $250. Has anyone seen this rifle. I don't know enough about bolt actions to know if this thing is worth anything. Has anyone seen this gun, and does it look like it would be a decent gun? They also have a Weatherby for just $150 more. I'm not a big impulse shopper, I usually hoard money away until I have the cash to pay for what I want. It would take longer to get the Weatherby, but is it a signifantly better riffle? Again I know nothing about bolt actions, so explain it to me like I'm a woman. (not one who's on here, they know more than me)

AJ
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor LOL! Good one John. I have not shot one of the Mossberg rifles yet. I have looked at them a bit though. I do see that Mossberg has the 100 ATR on its website. The action looks like its a savage clone in that it uses what appears to be a barrel locking nut in front of the receiver. But the nnut does not appear to have grooves or flats for a wrench to grab. So I dunno. I have not yet been able to see the action outside of the stock to make a more detailed call on the gun. If I remember correctly, the bolt uses a rotating head like the Savage does. It does have a different safety than the Savage does though. For $250 I don't think you could go wrong by purchasing one of these. It may or may not shoot MOA groups, but I will bet its more than good enough for hunting conditions. Is this gun better than the Howa? I don't know. Will it work just as well in the woods for deer? Probably.
johnf
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor Thanks AJ, the last time I asked about this rifle it wasn't on thier web sight. I talked to a guy in sporting goods at WM about them the other day and he said they were selling a lot of them. They also sell a lot of the Charles Daly Simi-Shotguns too, and he said they started comming back about a year after they started selling them. I'm just a little pariniod about buying something that isn't a proven performer. The Weatherby that they have is for $398 beside the $244 for the Moss. looks a little steep, but I hear a lot of good things about the weatherby. Last year I got a Benelli Nova and spent almost that much more over the 870 pump, and am happy with that purchase. I think I'll waint untill I can hear back from someone who has one. $250 is pretty cheap for a good gun, but it's a lot for something that you can't use. AJ
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor [ QUOTE ] ...thats a pretty reasonable price for a weatherby. [/ QUOTE ] If it were a true Weatherby, it would be a steal. Since it is a Howa, its an average deal. The Vanguard is a decent gun. I had one in .300 Wby and have a Howa in 22-250. The only drawback to the .300 Weatherby Mag in a Vanguard, is the short barrel. They only offer the 24" barrel with the Vanguard. The Wby Mag needs a 26" or longer barrel to see its true potential. I put a 28" barrel on mine.
Guest ronin
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor My wife just gave me some input to type for you...she's a woman, BTW! She said that the Mossberg's are OK but in the long run you might just prefer the Weatherby
hutchies
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor I bought a Howa this year and love it! Bought it at Wal-Mart on clearence. It was marked down from $450 to $330 and it is stainless steel with syntheic stock. Figured I couldn't go wrong for that price. Shot 2 deer this year with it. Dropped a 6 point at 130 yards and shot a doe at about 110 yards. She only made it fifty yards.
spyderpancake
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor The Weatherby Vanguards are decent rifles, except for their flimsy synthetic stocks, but they shoot pretty well. By the way, Howa's and Smith&Wesson 1500's are made on the same factory and are almost identical.

spyderpancake
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor AJ,that's what i meant-the S&W and Howa are made in the same factory as the Vanguard. I thought so about the mossberg too but wasn't sure.
spyderpancake
Re: Mossberg, yes AJ I know I\'ve asked this befor By the way, i shot my best buck lst year with a S&W 1500 in .270. My brother-in-law dropped it off at my house to sight in the Leupy VXIII he got for it, so i decided to carry it hunting the next morning. I made good shot on a nice 8-point-he was pretty satisfied when he came by the get his rifle!
