Guest Outcast
We have an area on the edge of our woods that is about 3 acres, all open, but grown in golden rod. It has a small stream that runs along two sides. Then the other two sides are wooded. Below the stream is a small apple orchard that closes off the bottom edge of this clearing. Below the Apple orchard is a 300 acre field of soybeans. At least it has been soybean for the last 5 years. I want to turn the opening into some sort of food plot that the deer can use prior to hitting the soybeans. They tend to fead on the soybeans heavily, but only after dark. I need something they can hit before going out after dark. Hopefully I didn't loose anyone.
dogdoc
I am assuming this will be a hunting spot so you want something that will stay green and be attractive for hunting season. The deer have the soybean forage for the warm season so I would concetrate now on killing off the vegetation for a late summer/early fall planting. If it was me I'd plant a mixture of oats/ryegrain/wheat/and brassica. The oats will be a great early season draw and the brassicas a great late season draw--the oats and rye will attract during the entire hunting season. You should be able to plant a nice plot with 3 acres. 25# of oats 25# of wheat 25# rye 5# of brassica all per acre. good luck todd
