johnf
I've got a friend with a big bodark (sp?) tree in his yard. It's a very hard yellow and green wood that is a favorite of custom duck call makers around here. Does anyone have an idea of what it would cost to get a custom rifle stock cut out of a peice of that tree? Does any one do this?
iron buck
First off you would have to cut a blank at least 7" tall, 2.5" wide and about 36 inches long. Then let it air dray in a cool, dry place for at least 5 years. I'd wax the end grain to keep it from warping & checking(cracks). Drying to fast is a problem. I'd also quarter saw the wood instead of slab cutting aka plain sawing it. Again, it just makes for a more stable blank. When all of this is done, you could have it turned into a rifle stock for about $1000....and up if you pay someone to do the entire job. Or ...if you are handy, for $250 you could get it semi inletted & then finish the job yourself.
