...so this morning I was set up on the edge of a field where I had a close encounter with a nice gobbler yesterday. The field is located at the base of a mountain and the turkeys routinely pitch off the mountain into the fields.

It was very quiet with nothing seemingly stirring on the roost. It was well past the time I thought turkeys should be off the roost so I softly yelped on my pot call. I heard a hen yelp back just up the hill...still on the roost. No more than 2-3 minutes later turkeys started sailing off into the field about 70-80 yards in front of me. They were all hens...10 of them. One of the hens started purring and cutting while the others just feed in the field. All of the sudden a gobbler started going nuts every time the hen purred and cutt...he too was still on the roost. I mimicked the hen note for note and we had this bad boy turned inside out.

About 5 minutes later he pitched off the roost and landed directly in the middle of all the hens. What happened next is what surprised me. As soon as the gobbler's feet hit the ground, the hens attacked him. I mean they were giving him a major butt whoppin'. He would duck and run and scramble but he was no match for a group of hens. I guess you could say he was "hen pecked". :D

This went on for 5 more minutes until a group of coyotes heard all the commotion and busted them up.

I have been chasing turkeys off and on since the mid 80's and have never seen a gobbler get his butt kicked by a group of hens...and I mean bad! Has anyone else ever experienced this?
