BearClaw
What are the pros and cons on hang-ons that have a chain vs the clinch strap? I have a couple of Gorilla Kong stands that have the clinch strap and I like them. Sportsman's Guide has a Baby Gorilla on sale with the chain. I don't really need another but at $34.97 I might pick one up. Opinions please!
ThethirdI
I have one of the Gorilla "Wolverine" models and although it is a good stand to hunt from I would never buy another stand with a chain on it again, unless it was a spectacular deal and I was going to put it up once a year and never move it. Holding that thing up and then trying to get a chain connected to a hook that moves while trying not to lose your balance and slip is a joke. Sometimes I put it up in a couple of seconds and other times it turns into a cussing match between me and the stand. I still use the Wolverine every year and love it, but that one encounter at the beginning of every season stinks.
Strut10
It's almost impossible to slip in and hang a chain-on without every critter in the woods knowing you're there. Stinkin clanging things!! I've owned 2 chain-on stands. One got stolen and I was glad to see it go. I returned the other one to where I bought it. johnf
I've got a chain on and I ususally keep a rachet strap on it too. The chain just doesn't get it tight to the tree like I like it. If it's a comfortable stand, I would get it, but I would strap it down in addition to the chain.

Have a gorilla chain on stand, and it is a bit of work to get it attached to the tree in a way where I am comfortable with it in regards to the chain and how tight it is. The gorilla chain on I have is not at all comfortable either.
wildthing
Me personally...I hate the chain stands...hard to hang and get adjusted right. I only use the ratchet straps...
3whunt
I use chain-ons sometimes...when I do, they are secured with one of these.. http://1st-chainsupply.com/binders/tightener.htm

Also, if you "rubber-dip" your chains, that will cut the noise factor way down!! The chain on models, have to be put on a tree in such a way, that you hook up the chain while holding the stand in the opposite hand, and then let the weight of the stand take the slack out of the chain. After you climb up into this type of stand, your body weight will also "set" the stand onto the tree. Of course you "MUST" use a climbing belt to install any hang on stand!!! I have been using a chain on model for over 20 years with no problems!!!
Randy
I hang my stands early and leave them out in the woods until after season. That means they could spend as much as 6 months out in the elements. I prefer the chain ons, I have both but after using the straps and seeing all the tree sap on them I wonder to myself, how long will these straps last and how will I know if they are getting bad. I'd hate to find out they are bad and find myself hanging from my safely strap 22 feet up in a tree. Just my $ .
