the one
Just like to tell everyone about my experience this weekend:). I was hunting on the edge of an old road leading to the creek bottom. On the right side of the road is and fence row with some pines trees and some undergrowth on the other side of the fence row is an open field about 100 acres or so. The road is about 14 feet wide and on the left side of the road is a small opening about a ¼ acre we have cleared that area and planted a food plot. I was sitting just inside the wood line. I set up Mr. B-Mobile along with is girl friend she mobile. Just as the sun started coming up I started hearing hens in the distance so I joined in about 20 min. past. I gave some more soft yelps. I saw what I thought was a turkey flying from across the open field and land a one of the pine tress along the fence row:confused:. That was a first I said to myself well as the sun started coming up I could clearly see a turkey setting in that pine tree. He hade flown in Mr. Big himself and was just sitting there checking out the area one smart bird was all I could say. I gave some soft yelps and clucks this went on for about 20 or 30 min he would strut in that tree ever time I called but he never gobbled. I decided to stop calling and after 10 min. of silence he decide to fly down not in the field to my set up but in the road leading off of the property:eek:. He strutted in that road for about 10 min. He was only about 50 yard from my setup but I could not get a clear shoot. He never gobbled once the whole time. I was starting to get worried you see the road that he was on is the only road leading to the camp. I know sooner or later someone would be coming down that road. Well he finally started to come into my set up and as luck would have it my worst fears. I could hear a truck coming down the road:( and he heard it too. I was hoping that he would try to make his escape route by running down the old logging road leading to the creek bottom that way I could at least get a shoot off. But no he decides to run into the wood line across the road. Man this is one smart bird this makes the 3rd time that I have set up on this gobbler and he still lives to see another spring day. He just might make it one more year because my season will be cut short I have to have surgery on the 23 of April.

rhine16
Sounds like he is a smart bird. Our birds didnt gobble off the roost yesterday either, but they gobbled their heads off saturday morning. I've seen em flying tree to tree right before daylight, but never recall a gobbler doing it. Kind of odd if you ask me. I hope you can get out and have another chance at him. Good luck if you do! Prayers will be with you for a successful surgery and quick recovery also!
