Gobblers do exist

Went out about 6:30 pm for what was gonna be a quick hike. Went over to the usual field. A lone turkeys spooks off the side of a hill in the field, how it saw me coming around these pines, I have no idea, but I think it was a hen. I walked down the field (same field, same hill where I got my jake last year) looking for tracks, poop, anything. I stop by this lone maple in the field, looking at some scratchings, then I hear wing beats and look down in the woods and at the back of this opening where it is swampy I see like 3 birds fly up...geesh. I walk back up the field, cut over to the old gravel pit, look in the sand for tracks, nothing, whereas last year they crossed through it like every day. It's about 7:30 now, stop and hoot on my call, nothing. I walk up to the top of the gravel pit, heading home, decide to hoot one more time and I hear gooobblllobblllleeee!!! It same from down in the woods, towards where I saw those turkeys fly up, also somewhat where I thought I'd heard a gobble that one morning last week but wasn't sure.YES!!!!!! Now let's hope he's still there come May 3rd when I can actually hunt. I don't think anyone will be up there youth season, maybe I'll see one person once during the regular season, but so far, like every year, I never see anyone up there scouting...or signs of anyone.

I'm gonna get up Weds. morning and see if I hear him and try to find out where those birds are going, but I know for now they like that corn field and bordering it are hardwoods and then two nice, lush grassy fields.
