snake3113
This father broke every hunting & parenting rule I can think of. Dresses an 8 year old in cammo. Drags kid to hunt turkey on private land without permission Tells kid "Hey, you stay here alone! I'm gonna hunt that turkey" Kid follows Dad Dad fires without knowing what he's shooting at BOOM! Kid dead Never woulda saw THAT coming? 8-year-old Belle Plaine boy killed in hunting accident, Star Tribune April 20, 2008 A 8-year-old Belle Plaine boy is dead after his father mistook him for a wild turkey and shot him in the chest Saturday evening while hunting in Sibley County, authorities said Sunday. Anthony Klaseus and his son, Hunter, spotted turkeys in a plowed farm field in Faxon Township, near Belle Plaine, said Sheriff Bruce Ponath. Klaseus told his son to stay put as he snuck closer to the turkeys. Klaseus made his way into some woods when Hunter decided he would catch up with his dad, Ponath said. The boy was about 20 to 30 yards away when Klaseus mistook him for a turkey and fired his 12-gauge shotgun, the sheriff said. Hunter was in a grassy field at the time. Klaseus carried his wounded son about a quarter mile to where emergency personnel could get to him. He called 911 from his cell phone about 6:25 p.m., Ponath said. "To say that he was distraught would be an understatement," the sheriff said. Father and son were wearing camouflage, which is legal for turkey hunting, not blaze orange. The accident remains under investigation. http://kstp.com/article/stories/S418573.shtml?cat=

DU_man_84
very sad story in deed, something seems real fishy on this story, the father pretty much neglected his kid in the wild and mistakes him for a turkey, id like to see the investigation on this case

turkeybuster
Thats pretty messed up. I would say someone doesn't deserve to hunt let alone be a dad.
texastrophies
I feel so sorry for the father and their family. I know if I ever did anything to harm my son, it would destroy my world and not make it worth living. Yes he made a mistake, but maybe he wasn't as lucky as all of you who want to hang him, maybe he didn't know how to hunt or have someone teach him. Maybe he was just trying to spend some time in the outdoors with his son and it went all wrong. An accident like this should never happen in our minds, but maybe this was an accident. Before you prosecute him, you might want to find out the rest of the story.
wtnhunt
That is very sad. So much about that story is wrong, and feel terrible for the family. No telling how many times I have said it before and will probably say it many times more, always know your target and what is beyond it, if that one rule of practice was followed we would not read these type stories. outdoortexan
Thank you very much for posting this. I carry a news clipping of a mother and daughter weeping at the funeral of the father and son killed in a hunting incedent. The father mistakenly shot his son, then in grief killed himself. I show it to each and everyone of my students in hunter education classes. I will try to find a clipping on this and add it to my classes. I truely wish I had no reason to bring up these issues, but every year there has to be at least one event that makes it into my class. My heart goes out to the family. I agree to a point...leaving an 8 year old standing by himself, alone in the woods while his Dad walks away from him into the woods?? That is reason to prosecute enough in NYS. Common sense should have told this father "hey..maybe your son may wander and get lost". I know my son, who is very obedient probably would have been very scared and may have tried to follow me also. This possibly leading to him getting lost. Do I feel sorry he shot his own son?? ABSOLUTELY..this man just lacks common sense or parenting skills or a combination of the two to think he should leave an 8 year old standing alone in the woods while he walks away. That must have been very scary for the child.

AdvantageTimberLou
Sad deal all around, there is a father who will never tuck his son in at bed at night. A wife that probably can't look her husband in the eye anymore. Probably a divorce on the way due to guilt from the father. Possibly suicide from the father. Accidents due happen, should not have happened but this father has to live with this for his entire life. His life is ruined. God has a plan for all of us, we don't know all the details but its a plan and granted some plans don't seem that fair but please don't belittle this dad as he is living with a pain that I hope none of us on here ever have to go through. Prayers go out to this family, they need it more than ever! Peace be with Hunter as well.
