1997xltlimited
I am going to buy my first call and wanted toi know what I should be looking for? I would like it to be able to do as many sounds as possible, and would like it be fine for all weather conditions? What should I look for, what should I stay away from? Name Brands? Thanks
Bowtech_archer07
I've got a 360 by HS Strut and I absolutely love it. It makes every call you can think of. I bought it before season last year.. called in my first 2 longbeards ever and got one. This year I've called in 2 longbeards. Shot one, the other one I called in for my dad and we just couldn't get a shot on him. It sounds great!!
okiedog
Shoot Andy (bowhunter56) a pm here on the forums. He has hands down the best slate I have ever used:). Here is his website to look at some calls. www.ajcustomcalls.net
The Kid
i use the freak (The glass surface) from primos, just remeber i think correct me if i'm wrong guys that most glass surface calls don't work good when there wet, i'm not sure if this has any signifcants, but just to keep in mind

I think one of the best thing about that call is that the sound ports aren't under the slate like most. Instead they are all around the edge which is why it is called the 360. rhine16
I use the Freak(slate one, not glass), Power Crystal, and The Jackpot all by Primos. But as was said above, might wanna shoot Andy a pm. I'm sure his calls are awesome. It is only a matter of time before I break down and buy one
EKYhunter
i use the freak (The glass surface) from primos, just remeber i think correct me if i'm wrong guys that most glass surface calls don't work good when there wet, i'm not sure if this has any signifcants, but just to keep in mind Glass will work when wet provided you are using an acrylic or synthetic striker and not a wooden one. There are many great slate calls on the market such as HS, Woodhaven, Primos, Knight and Hale, etc. BUT, I think that if you buy one from an individual you stand a good chance of getting a much better call. I just think that a custom/semi-custom call is better than a mass production call.
sportsman2500
Anything Woodhaven. you're gonna pay some money, but you will NOT dissapointed!!

Squirrelhunter91
I hunt with nothing but custom calls. Except for my diaphragms. www.purdyscustomturkeycalls.com
Tominator
Sweetest call I have was made by none other than our own Strut10. I don't know if Don is still in the business, but my call from him makes the sweetest purrs I've ever heard. I also have one from Andy, but that's a commemorative Exturkinator model, and I'm not planning on roughing that one up any time soon. Rhino
I used a lot of slate calls over the years and most of the ones I use now are custom calls. Really what's best for one person is not necessarily best for another though. For whatever reason some calls just seem easier to use than others depending on who's working it. Not sure what subspecies of turkey you're hunting but I've found that Merriams and Rios like a higher pitched call than Eastern birds. If you have any turkey hunting buddies try some of their slate calls and see which one is easiest for you to talk turkey with.
maytom
For an all weather call, the Knight & Hale Sla-Tec call can't be beat along with a Woods-Wise Mystic stick.
elnor
Has anyone tried the Knight & Hale "Silver Hammer" aluminum pots? I've read good things but haven't gotten ahold of one to try myself yet.
