Salt Block

Recommended Posts

I use trace mineral blocks all of the time from Tractor supply. I picked up 6 plain salt blocks on Saturday, because they were out of the trace blocks. I put out 12 last summer and they were all gone by October. Not saying it has helped horn development or anything else, but it shows me that deer are on my property and they are using them. I also put out the deer cain blocks and some others just to see the difference. They used them the same as the others. I think I pay less than $5 for the fifty pound trace blocks.

I put out one of the trace red mineral blocks (50#) about a month ago. I dig a hole and bury half the block with the other half sticking out. This helps the minerals leach into the soil. The deer are absolutely tearing it up right now. It's a mud hole with tracks everywhere. I got 20 different pics on it just the last week. This is usually the time they start hitting them hard. Don't waste your money on the deer cain flavored blocks.

I use trace mineral blocks from Tractor Supply. In one place in particular where I had a block last year, the deer have dug a huge hole in the ground, tracks everywhere, where they must be eating mud or drinking water that builds up there...crazy.

I am going to get a few more soon to put out. Minerals can't hurt for the overall health of the deer.

I too use the red/brown mineral blocks from TSC. I went back many weeks ago to check on them and they are completely dissolved from the winter. But its like an elk wallow where they were from the deer. Not too mention hair all over from them losing their summer coats. So I just replaced and put more blocks out, plus I also put out a trophy rock and I got a bag of Evolved Habitats mineral powder & put that down too and see. But I will stick to the mineral blocks from TSC, can't beat the price on those for a 50#'er.

I went out to check my camera today and check the mineral blocks. Unfortunately my battery went dead on the camera but the one block the deer have a hole dug alongside of it. It's on the downhill side so maybe where all the mineral/salt is draining from all the rain we've had. It's getting to be a good size hole! I wish I would have taken a picture of it. Thanks again for the advice. Let me see, $5.00 for a small flavored block (which work by the way) or $8.00 for 50 lbs...no brainer! I'll try to get a picture next time.
