anyone that has a crotch rocket

I decided today that I'm gonna buy one. My dad actually suggested it, rather than putting an exhaust system on my truck. Then coming home from work, I put $92 dollars worth of gas into my truck. I figure thats at least $180 a month in gas, I can make payments on a motorcycle for less than that, and have a cool toy.

My buddy knows of one for sale for $3,000 which is what I want to spend. It's either an 02 or 03 CBR 600 F4i, in great shape, with 5k miles. This sound like a decent deal?

Now, what do I look for when buying one? Any specific parts or places that I should check for wear?

Remember, that is not your total savings....you are still going to use that truck in the rain, and cold days and winter aren't you?

I had 2 or 3 of them pass me on the way to work as I was putt putting to save gas cruising at 50mph, then a nice Harley passed me, and I thought to myself "self, you should get a bike and save some gas money.....a Harley.

Thing about a Harley at my age and you're instantly having a mid-life crisis. :D

I had a Ninja 600R in the early 90's.

I rode it for 3 years and had several close calls because people didn't see me. I was lucky I never wrecked because in IL helmets are not required by law so I seldomly wore one.

I had to replace one back tire and a mirror from it falling over once. I purchased it for 2800.00 and sold it 3 years later for 2800.00. I wasn't looking to save money at the time, but no doubt it did.

I've thought about getting a bike, but crotch rockets are very uncomfortable after an hour or two of ridding. You could get a used Honda or Yamaha or whatever that has the look and comfort of a Harley? I know I would if my kids were grown. They need a dad right now so I can't take the risk.

If you do get a bike get a good helmet.:)

Yeah, I'm not sure this would be as big of a savings as you're counting on.

Like Swampy says, you're still going to drive your truck in the rain, when it's really cold, and all winter long. Plus, your insurance is going to sky rocket if you own and drive a bike and you'll be paying insurance on two vehicles instead of one. Not to mention the $3,000 you're going to have to finance and pay interest on.;)

I'd suggest using more public transit if that's an option, or just slowing down and using your cruise control more if your truck has that.

This all said, crotch rockets aren't my thing. Pretty much everyone I've known who have owned them have dumped them, some have been seriously hurt. My one friend told me he went 175 mph on his. I said, "why would you want to do that?" And he said "well, once you're up over 100 mph, if you crash it's going to be the same going 175 mph."

My brain just doesn't work like that.:D

I'd think this whole thing through a little more, run the numbers, and call your insurance agent before you make a snap decision.

...Yeah, I agree with everyone here on this...it's dangerous all the way around, you can't always count on using it all the time, hidden costs in the long run, etc...BUT- if you are set on getting a bike...I would opt for what Flyerla said...get something else besides the "crotch rocket"...they are uncomfortable as heck, even for a passenger(I've been told)....and a Yamaha, or the like, would be a better bet-

-and , completely agree....a GOOD HELMET...I like the ones that just protect the head...the full-neck ones have caused so many neck/spinal injuries in accidents...(just my opinion, of what I've seen...)

-Have you considered a mountain bike?...how far is it to work?

If you plan on going any distance on a bike, I'd recomend a cruiser over a crotch rocket. Its just uncomfortable driving for an hour stretched out over a gastank. If I were to get a bike these days, due to the riduclous ammount of insurance, I'd look for something little like the Honda Rebel. Cheap on gas, cheap on insurance, cheap to buy (only around 5K brand new), and you don't have enough power to get yourself into real serious trouble.

When I was 17, I had a crotch rocket. Being young, stupid, and invincible, I decided to open it up on the highway. I was going about 120mph when I hit some gravel, lost my traction, and laid it down and rode the gas-tank for a good 1/4 mile or more. I flipped it into the ditch and left it there, and decided I was luckey to be alive with only a couple nicks and scrapes...

3 of my buddies have crotch rockets and they love them. i have driven them a few times and it adds a little more excitement to your commute when you are on 2 wheels. Although they are for sure dangerous and most of the people i know have laid it down, they are fun, especially when you have a face like my ugly mug and need a little help pickin up the ladies:)

The dangerous factor isn't gonna be enough to convince me to not want one. If I never did anything dangerous in my life, I wouldn't have much fun would I? 3 wheelers were banned in the 80's because they were too dangerous, but i have 4 of them and have never hurt myself. I know more people that own bikes and haven't been hurt, than I do that have hurt themselves seriously. The ones I know that have been hurt, were being stupid when they were.

For those of you talking about hi-speed crashes, i've never been gutsy enough to get my truck over 80, it's not happenin on a bike anytime soon. I drive like a grandma.

And I know I won't really save much money, but for the same amount of money I will have 2 vehicles, and the bike I can always sell and get myself ahead again.

payments for 2 vehicles

gas for 2 vehicles

insurance on 2 vehicles

repairs on 2 vehicles

sorry but I think having 2 vehicles will cost you more.:o

Good luck on your decision grandma:D:D:D

Im probably gonna end up gettin a bike myself...but its not goin to be a rice rocket. It will save money on gas especially on longer trips (i tend to take a 140mile one way trip several times a month). Insurance wont be too bad i dont think, you only have to insure it for half the year. Why insure it when its stored for the winter.

You only live once so might as well have fun!! Be Safe!!

buddy if ya want ya a bike get ya one! You'll have a blast on it, but be careful. It will save you alot of money, they aren't much upkeep as long as you get a good one. Watch your tires and keep your oil fresh. As long as ya don't try to show off you'll be fine. The way I see it is God already has your day to die planned, and if thats on a motorcylce then so be it. When it's your time to go, it's your time to go. Don't live in fear! My dads had a bike for years and I've road it since I was 16. They really will save ya a ton of gas! Not to mention ladies love em....but unfortunately, dads hate em :)
