tips for kids beginning in archery

OK guys, looking for constructive tips here to help my 12 year old daughter to help improve her form and shooting, and will probably have her view this to see what tips are given here. She had been shooting for less than a week when I taped part of this shooting session earlier on this week, no archery experience prior to that other than shooting a recurve a few times at gander mountain. What I see that needs work and what we have been working on since I watched this back are her follow through and on her posture. Kind of wondering if her draw is maybe a tad too long too? Any tips on improving, and what if anything are we missing that might help her.

Straighter wrist, straight forearm, forearm should be straight inline with arrow,,she is grabing the bow with her hand when she releases..she is shaking,,is bow poundage too much?

feet should be shoulder with apart...hope this helps..:)

I would agree with all of this!

Follow through with the shot....seems sometime she is looking to see where she shoots before she actually releases the arrow.

Keep practicing young lady!!! ;):)

1. Drawlength is too long. That is what is causing the wrist to be bent and her slapping her arm with the string. I'm sure that is also the reason that she is leaning back. She needs to be standing up straight.

2. Poundage needs to come down about 5 lbs. She is shakey and having problems drawing the bow.

3. Follow thru........On a couple of the shots she was moving the bow to see where the arrow hit...........Very common mistake among new archers.

4. Grip.........She doesn't have stick her fingers out. Just a relaxed grip. Sticking the fingers out can be very dangerous when she gets around to shooting broadheads. Get a finger up to high and you may lose it.

5. Triggering the release.............. Tell her to focus on the target, not the pin, and slowly squeeze the release. Teaching her the right way starting out will be alot easier than trying to break her from punching.

She's doing good. A few minor changes and she will be shooting a ton better and enjoying it alot more. One thing I have all my buddies do with their kids is start the bow on what is comfortable poundage wise for the child. About every week or 2 turn the limbs up a half turn. The child won't realize and in no time have those limbs maxed out.

this video probably wont work on my computer as i have been having trouble with photobucket vids but from what i can see without watching it she needs to stand up straight like was said above. if she is shooting an adult length release maybe look into getting her one with a shorter pull. hope this helps along with everyone else's post

That is a problem for sure. I noticed the other day when she was shooting that her fingers are not quite long enough for the release she is using. She is using my wifes release for now, I will have to get her a youth release as soon as I can find one.

Will shorten the draw length a little before we shoot this afternoon and back the limb bolts out about a half turn too.

Thanks again everyone for the replies.

Try the release first. Depending on how long the release is not it may shorten it enough that you won't need to shorten the draw length.

We have been shooting just about every afternoon, the draw stop is very simple to adjust. I probably will not be able to get her another release until next week some time. We will most likely still shoot, wonder if I should shorten it up about a half an inch until I can get her a youth release?

Yep, that's why I said start with a tab and see if she likes that.

1. Lower the poundage

2. Have her widen her stance, and bend the knees slightly, she's locking them legs up, causing her to lean.

3. Draw length adjustment has been discussed...

4. Have her count slowly in her head to keep the bow up after the release, then after 3 seconds, lower to see the impact.

5. Dad,...stand with her, and show her how you stand, and shoot with her, side by side....have her mock your stance....I think its great she is out shooting...give all the positive advise you can...she'll be kneeling over her first deer in no time at all....al

We watched the tape back tonight several times and in slow motion for her to see closer and the more I watch it, really thinking a youth release will correct a few problems.

Thought I had some, but dont guess have any finger tabs anymore Chris. Might check on some as soon as I get a chance to get to a store or shop around here that carries them.

Thanks again for all the replies here.

With the new youth release and the draw length shortened a bit, she is doing quite a bit better. At about 12 yards she had a couple groups of 4 arrows that were within a 4-5 inch circle all in the vitals on our 3d target, shooting some right on top of each other, she busted the nock on one of her arrows.
