Guest akmike30
I live in Alaska and i'm getting into Ml just wondering which brand is the best for taken big game in alaska:D
wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Think "which brand" is all a matter of personal preference. Personally I like TC ml'ers. Still hunting with a black diamond .50 cal here, and it works quite well for deer for us. Will eventually upgrade probably to a TC omega or triumph one of these days. RangerClay
If I was living in your neck of the woods I would choose something as weather resisitant as possible. I would choose an Omega or a Triumph.
aksheephuntress
...Hi, Akmike!...and welcome to the Real tree forums!...nice to see another Alaskan, here,as well... -Where about are you located?-which units do you hunt mainly?...and are you hunting bear? -I hunt with the Thompson Centers.... .45 ,.50, .54, and .58 for bear- -all mine are wood- but I'll agree with Rangerclay...those newer in-line ones , with the synthetic stock, are what I'd really like to get before too long- ....I had always thought pure traditional was always the way I would go...but when going through the qualifying shoots for my muzzleloader card a few years ago,I got to shoot those in-lines for the first time...oh,my-were those nice ! ...Just keep in mind that in the hunts in areas for muzzleloader -only require the ML card, and restrict from using any rifle scope. -Welcome! bluelund79
If you are having problems grouping at 100 yds, try using 3 pellets, if your CVA is rated for 150 gr of powder, try some different size powerbelts as well, 245, 300+ etc. Also, don't be afraid to try the sabots from other companies. You have to clean more often than the power belts, but it may improve your groupings!

Might try loose powder as an option too. With my black diamond using loose pyrodex, I found that the best accuracy came with 120 grains of powder. Confident enough with that charge with 240 grain xtp mags to take shots on these whitetails here out to 150 yards without thinking twice about it. Under all the right circumstances, might take shots out to 200 on deer.
billkay
I'd consider the 52 from Knight. Much better ballistics than a normal 50.
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
We prefer Thompson center. I have had my Encore for about 4 years I think, my dad wanted to get into muzzleloader hunting and just bought himself a T/C triumph about a month ago, haven't had a chance to shoot it but I can tell you, just by shouldering it it is just as comfortable if not more, than my encore and is lighter as well. But, like the others said, just sounds like you may need to work up some loads for the gun you have. but if you are really wanting to get a new gun, T/C triumph is what I would get if you were looking for just a muzzleloader, encore if you may want to switch barrells down the road
Chrud
I really like my Thompson/Center Encore Pro Hunter. The Pro Hunter is a little (about $65 in our area) more expensive than the original Encore, but the features are worth it.
Guest gt2003
Toss the powerbelts and get some real bullets. Too many horror stories to even consider them. Use maybe a Hornady XTP 300 grain bullet, a Speer gold dot or one of the barnes bullets. Personally I like the precision rifle all lead bullets. I really think I'd stay away from the powerbelts as I have heard numerous stories of them exploding on impact except for powder charges of 80 grains or less. too_pointer
Everyone can have problems with there guns accuracy with diffrent bulltes. Powerbelts have been around a long time because they do shoot accurate and are deadly on game. I wouldn't write them off. too_

aksheephuntress
...Hey, AK Mike....-did you see any ? -They are coming out in groves, over here...-I just know it- (heard of 7 bear, anyway...) -We always wait 'till they come a little lower..-lot of snow load this year, as you know... -If you need a stop-over, on your trek from the other side; pm me....we will put you up, and- perhaps you would be inclined to try it a go, on the "sunny-side of the peninsula..."....(near Seward...) ....I appreciate hunting attitudes, as yours, to attempt to take a bear with a muzzleloader..... ....Lots of trails around this area..... Tecumseh
I hunted with a TC renegade for 15 plus years and now have a encore prohunter and couldn'e be happier with it.
Guest adirondackhunter
I like the Thompson center omega with the 240 xtp,2pellets of the triple 7.I used some of the power belts and had them shatter when they hit bone.
