Loads affecting poi?

I wouldn't drop much below 75gr. Not only will your point of impact be different but the terminal performance of bullet will also be affected. If you use a pure lead bullet the expansion should still be there. I would stay away from the jacketed pistol bullets.

I agree getting out there with the kids during the early season is the way to go. Around here the deer get very skittish as the year goes on.

Re: Loads affecting poi?

I would think 85gr would be just fine. That's still a decent charge.

In a hunting situation I'd bet she wouldn't notice the difference between a 85 and a 120gr load once the adrenaline starts pumping.

Maybe start her out with a lesser charge then without her knowing slowly start boosting the load till you're at your present level. Just teach her to roll with the recoil and don't ever let her think it'll hurt her. I wouldn't let her know you've adjusted anything from the normal charge.

I kinda did this with my daughter during archery season. I wasn't telling her I was raising the draw weight on her bow. Before she knew it she was pulling 50lbs comfortably. I put 12lbs of draw weight on her bow and she didn't even know it. We did have to continually change her sights but she never caught on as to why. smirk.gif

Re: Loads affecting poi?

Is your daughter planning on hunting deer with load?

The others are right I think. You have to have a proper powder charge to push the bullet down the barrel at a speed that will be accurate. I believe anything less than 85 grains, might be dangerous!

I compare a 80-95 grain charge with a light 20 guage shotgun recoil. We would need more info on what gun and powder you want to use to address this better.

Re: Loads affecting poi?

Rather than JUST a lesser charge, you may consider using

a lighter bullet, such as the 200gr XTP. If your rifle will

shoot them accurately, there is undoubtedly a load in

which the poi will be the same as your loads with the

240gr XTP. The lighter bullet will also reduce recoil, even

with a heavier charge.

And I know for a fact that this "weenie" 200gr bullet

will knock the lungs out of a medium sized deer out

to a hundred yards with a 90gr load of pyro.
