Recommended Posts

...GOT SOME PICS OF MY FIRST SHOTS OUT OF MY NEW 30.06 SHEEP RIFLE...(FROM SIGHTING IN ON THE RANGE A FEW WEEKS AGO..)-150 GRN . FEDERAL...FIRST TARGET @ 50 YDS....2ND AT 100 YDS.-

....First shots out of this rifle....it kicked good!...but sure was nice to feel how it shouldered...and to shoot a couple of targets, and be pleased of the results so far....

-A dead animal, at least....:)

-and lots of shooting practice with various loads, until then....

(haven't picked up other ammo , yet...:o):D

...wait a minute, I'll go copy-to-paste the pics...

A fine lookin collection.

My guess on the case would be seal skin.

:D:D;)...YES!- You're right, Handgunnr...it actually was something we found by accident, while talking with this gun shop owner, in his office in the back, 2 years ago...He had had it since the '70's, and it was just back there collecting dust...we inquired and made an offer on it- he let it go for surprisingly very little!- I don't know of very many people ,even up here, with one...Hal Wagh, who held the Alaskan Guide no. 1 up here in the '50's and 60's had one, for his beloved .375, "Big Nan".

...Thanks!!

-You know...I also have to clarify...I am not really happy with how I arranged the guns for the picture...I was kind of in a hurry, and I am not familiar with this digital camera I was using...

-I should have taken the pic, with them on the floor, instead of the bed...

-and I just grabbed some things to prop under some of them ,to get a better angle..

-Also...the ammo next to my .30-06 are 220 grn Remington Core-Lokt soft points...(not the 150 grn I shot, out at the range previously)...I had some in my pocket, after a hike out back, here...bears are starting to wake up...and I thought they would add "ambiance" to the picture...

-And...I was tired last night when I posted this...didn't bother listing my calibers; figured you guys could tell what they were, anyway...

-but- in front, of course, is my new Winchester .30-06 Featherweight...with the newly mounted Nikkon Primos BDC 3x9x40 scope...(with high 1" 2-pc qck release rings...I think I erroneously stated they were 30mm, before...)

Next above is my very well-used favorite...my .338 Browning A-bolt...that scope is all beat up from a fall down that snow-slide in Falls Creek, 4 years ago, and everything else-...

-next up is my .58 cal muzzleloader...boy, I love that one...

-Next is an Old Army model Ruger .44 black powder pistol with walrus ivory grips...probably the most beautiful pistol I've ever seen(to me, anyway..)

-and then...the Winchester model 70 .375 H&H Magnum with a Leupold vari- X111 1.5 - 5

Is the Winchester one of the new production models? I have a Winchester Mod 70 in 30-06 but mine is wood and was one of the last ones produced with the old company. I love mine but the workmanship on mine leaves a LOT to be desired.

Best of luck to you on your sheep hunt and with the Model 70!!

Scott

....Thank you, Scott, for the well-wishes for my sheep hunt!

...I'm pretty sure it is one of the newer ones....it's the featherweight...

-Here is a pic when I went up part of Mt. Alice yesterday, with my .30-06, looking for a bear...(watched one for a while..a nice one!...he'll be there in a week, or so,still...after some of the snow decays and I can get to him...):D

...BTW....I had my camera date set on 2007, instead of 2008....:o:)

...Ok...I had to add another picture, from yesterday...I watched this big bear for a while, through the binocs......you can see him in the bottom pic...about mid-picture...he's way over on the next ridge...impassable creek, down below...and it was almost 7:00 pm....

Yep, I see him out there munching those green bushes I would guess. Probably just woke up!

Good luck on him. Hope he finds your bait soon!

.....Actually...I'm not baiting ,this year...Can't work a station and haul all that bait up here...I prefer to spot and stalk, anyway...-I've been after this big bear for 2 years, now...(if he's the same one...)-and,he'll make his way up and back around from that steep ridge, accross there, to the bowl in the back-that joins this and that ridge...it will green up quick, after the snow is gone...-probably will have to wait until after my sheep hunt to go back up to try for this one(for my fall bear)...I'll try another lower spot, for my spring bear...

...God willing,though....

Kathleen just how far are you from the bear in the pic???

...Oh,Jeepers!!...-I am on one mountain...(Mt Alice..) and he is on the next...on a pretty steep incline...the picture can be deceiving...but I know you can be able to reference each grade , and probable distance, by the angle of the trees..and my proximity to them...

-the trees in the foreground are pretty much in front of me...(15 or so, yards )...and -to the other side...I'll estimate...1200 yards??...

-through the binocs(Nikkon:D), I enjoyed watching him feed, zig-zag, lift his brown muzzle, and amble about that steep grade...there is a small dark piece of fluff, or whatever, at the end of that branch...-makes it look like there is a cub there...-but it's not....I watched that big, almost leg-less, thick-headed brute for a half an hour, before I had to high-tail it back home...:)

-What a neat first bear sighting of the year(for me at least...other people around here have seen more..and 5 have been shot..)

-I like to get up in that bowl, on top on the right -hand side...I have been stalking this (or, a similiar) bear, for 2 years, now...that's where I have always found him.

-much longer hike, though...:o:rolleyes:-(and pack!)

50b733a7.jpg

...Ok...I took this pic(nevermind the 2007...still hadden't fixed the year-)...approx. 1/8 mile before the turnout to start the hike up.

-I only got 1/2 of the way up, before I realised I should have packed my ice-cleats, or something....(also...time factor-)-and that was before getting out of the treeline-

-I have usually spotted..and gone after that bear in the upper right hand area of the "bowl" of the mountain...-in this pic, you can only see part of the "bowl"...

-Late summer, early fall is a great time...-great blueberries up there then, too!

07aa1a49.jpg

......And this is just when I was coming out of the bottom of the trail...base of Mt Alice....

-Later in the summer...-takes me 2 hours to get up , into...and side-hilling around in the bowl, towards the top lip-then up and around the corner-(if I don't get side -tracked...:o:D:rolleyes:)

...packing a bear out of there is reasonably a tri-fold deal in the end...-But...there is at least one HUGE, awesome bear back up in there...-if not more...-and it is an excellent way to hunt, and get ready for sheep season....:)
