mainebuck
Re: Locked up elk pics... here's a good question: If you and your buddy were out hunting and came over a rise to see these two bulls locked up in the creek, would you shoot them? Assuming they didn't pull free and couldn't run away together who would shoot them and who would call the DNR or leave them be to see if they could sort it out? I'm betting that if you only had one elk tag you would not want to shoot just one of these bulls. How in the world would you deal with the other live bull when trying to recover the one you shot? If it were me and another buddy out there with each a tag I'd probably back off a little where I could see them but they couldn't see me and see if they could unhook from each other. I'd give them a couple hours, and if they were still stuck together I'd shoot, assuming my buddy would as well. If I was confident they wouldn't be able to break free might as well harvest them rather than mother nature doing it and making them stay like that for who knows how long. sasksheds
Re: Locked up elk pics... Def if there was 2 tags & 2 hunters, they would be harvested. With 1 tag I would call the game department.Mother nature can be pretty cruel sometimes but you have to do the legal thing.Thaanx for sharing. OJR
Re: Locked up elk pics... I would call DNR and let them handle it. I wouldn't shoot either one of them, even if I had a tag.

Guest andymansavage
Re: Locked up elk pics... This story was a big deal. Basically the landowners and the dwr were fighting over what to do and they let both elk die, it took a few days, but that's what happened. let me know if you want the whole story. mainebuck
Re: Locked up elk pics... I don't see how that was allowed to happen. The DNR people involved in that should be ashamed. If it's obvious the animals aren't going to be able to pull free give them a humane death.

Guest MarylandQDMA
Re: Locked up elk pics... why not use a tranqulizing (sp) gun then go in and cut the antlers free? but on the other hand I can see where they want to let mother nature take it's corse. if it was me, with a legt tag, I might shoot if I had a saw with me to cut antler to free up the other. Guest andymansavage
Re: Locked up elk pics... Around here they feed the elk in the winter because of the lack of winter range, it's not exactly letting nature take it's coures. I think they should of done something. We stopped letting nature take it's course when we developed the land.............

You know they would die a terrible death. I would do the right thing. If I had one tag, I would shoot one and then work to free the other. The best thing would be to have two tags and take them both. I have read that when these Elk get locked up and get so stressed out that in some instances they died anyway even after they were cut loose and separated. Taking these two bulls would be the right thing to do and definately not a waste.
Hillbilly
Re: Locked up elk pics... If I came over the hill and saw that I personally would have sat down and took some pics and watch the battle unfold. Then when they unlocked I would have to consider harvesting one. Cause if you would have shot one of them, the other would probably hurt himself to brink of death. Then you'd have two bulls with 1 tag. To dangerous to call.... Norm Sauceman
Re: Locked up elk pics... By the looks of it, the bulls were "locked" meanig they would never "unlock" therefore they would perish.. I think if you were waiting for them to unlock, you may have perished too...LOL
