Boss gobbler down in NY...

Not my bird though. My dad smacked this guy just before 6:00 this morning...23 lbs., 10" beard and 1 1/8" spurs. He came strutting out into the field with another longbeard and a jake, saw b-mobile showing off for the ladies and all three came on a dead run. This dude jumped up and knocked "b" off his stake (actually bent it) and started whooping up on him. After the shot the other longbeard and jake didn't know what had happened and just stood there looking around. They finally walked off over the knoll and starting gobbling again. The mornings action wasn't quite over yet though as another gobbler that had heard all the commotion from the other end of the field was coming in too! Dang, I should have been there with him.

As for me, I had a couple of big longbeards roosted last night. Six hens went into the woods below them so I knew that I'd have some competition this morning. To make a long story short...I had one of the gobblers roosting in a pine tree 40 yds from me. He was strutting and spitting/drumming in the tree. Another hunter came in on me and started hammering on his box call at 5:10 went it was still dark out. I watched the gobbler in the tree for 35-40 minutes and was all ready for him to plop out onto the logging road in front of me. The hens started flying down behind me and he pitched off the roost in the opposite direction that I was hoping for. He meet up with his buddy that was gobbling above me and the hens took 'em away. Oh well, thats the way it goes. Overall, it was a pretty good morning...heard 6 or 7 birds. Sure, can't wait to giver 'er heck again in the morning...:D!
