Shooting a 30-06 in a 25-06

Recommended Posts

I was just eating lunch (talking about guns) at work and had a guy say that he had a friend who had a Rem. 700 .25-06 rechambered to a 30-06. He said he didn’t have the barrel rebored, just the receiver. He said that it kicks like a mule when you shot the 30-06 rounds out of it because the barrel was still made up for the 25-06. He said the bullet must get longer when going through such a tight barrel. I was wondering if this is even possible, he said that they shot a lot of rounds through it and couldn’t tell the difference, except for the kick.

I wanted to call BS but,i t’s 3am here and I didn’t feel like arguing with him. Just wanted to know if it is possible to shoot a 30-06 round out of a 25-06 without blowing the gun up.

Thanks for any info.

Yes, it is. But I wouldn't advise it !!!!

Famed gunsmith, ballistician and wildcatter P.O. Ackley performed several experiments with barrels rechambered for larger-diameter bullets but not rebored. As your friend stated in his case, the rifles DID fire, and the projectiles DID exit the barrels.

I can't begin to imagine the pressure it takes to squeeze a .308 bullet down a .264 barrel, but here is a quote and a link --

Well known graduate engineer and gunsmith, Parker O. Ackley decided to find out once and for all how strong our various military actions were. Rounding up an assortment of Springfield, Mauser, Enfield P-14 and No 1 MkIII, Krag and Arisaka M38 and M99 actions, be barreled and chambered each action type for the .270 Ackley Magnum or .30-40 Ackley Improved cartridge.

Each action was then fired with a series of progressively hotter loads until the action was wrecked. The only action that survived these tests was the M38 Arisaka. The 1 3/16 inch bull barrels fitted to the M38 actions were split or blown off, but the actions remained serviceable and intact. The machined M99 Arisaka action proved to be the second strongest action of the group tested.

Shortly thereafter, the NRA reported testing a M38 in 6.5x50 caliber that had been rechambered for the .30-'06 cartridge by its enterprising owner who indeed hunted with this insane combination. Just imagine firing a .308" diameter bullet down a .264" bore at the pressures generated by the .30-'06 cartridge. The Arisaka digested the load without a hitch although the owner complained that the rifle kicked a lot!

Like they say on T.V., DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!!

And tell your co-worker to tell his friend to STOP IT, IMMEDIATELY!!!

While it may in fact be able to be done, I would think anyone trying this would be putting themself in harms way and would also be ruining a rifle. Bad idea all the way around in my opinion. Matter of fact think most rifle manufacturers in their manuals specifically say to load only with ammunition designed for that gun.

I just don't understand why people make premeditated decisions to do truely stupid things like this. Why even bother in the first place? What posesses a guy to wake up and think of tinkering with stuff to do things they were never designed to do?

I just don't understand why this would even be interesting to the normal Joe Shmoe, even if it were a safe thing to do.

Tell him to put some liquid nails on a hand grenade, pull the pin and throw it. With the liquid nails it should stick to whatever he throws it at.

Before you do that go to an insurance company and get an accedental death policy on him.
