unioncountyslayer
Ok, this Southern boy needs some help. I have had sauerkraut numerous times at ball games on a brat, but I have never had it at home. I had some deer meat made into brats this year, and was going to cook them this weekend. I picked up some Kraut at the grocery store today. My question is this: do I need to cook/boil the kraut before I put it on the cooked brat, or do you just eat it raw like relish? HELP! Fry a couple pieces of bacon, eat the bacon, leave the grease, warm the kraut up in the grease. And, very important, you might want to wash the kraut before you eat it. Sometimes that salt can have devastating, quick results on your digestive system, mainly the bottom end. Put the kraut in a collander and run some water over it. And anything cooked in bacon grease is ok with me.

Kraut!...Puts hair on your chest!(that's why I always wear turtle necks...:o;))-LOL

wildside
You might also want to try adding a touch of brown sugar to it. . . . takes just enough of the "bite" out yet still leaves it tangy.

Nut
Mama just puts it in the pan with the brats along with 12 ounces of beer....mmmm mmmm good.
Tominator
Mama just puts it in the pan with the brats along with 12 ounces of beer....mmmm mmmm good. Ditto, that's a good way too. If you have the time, poor some beer in, stick the kraut on the bottom of a crock pot, then layer some bacon over the kraut, then the brats or dogs or kielbasa or any other "ethnicmechanicallyseperatedgroundupstuffedinaskintypeprocessed meat" on the very top, let it cook dang near all day. The grease falls on the kraut and "seasons" it. Then finish the meat on the grill for a few minutes. People wonder why I'm overweight.
