Turkeygirl
Anyone see the Kentucky Derby yesterday? What a great race...and then Eight Belles broke both her front ankles they said and they immediately put her down....what a shame:( We saw her lying on the track on the TV and it was like uh oh...not good. It amazes me that she crossed the finish line in second place then went down.... then you have Big Brown who has bad hooves I guess (which Thoroughbreds tend to have bad hooves anyway) and he flew across the finish line...then dumped his jockey when being led back, lmbo:eek: That is going to be one Derby that will be remembered for a while...I sure do feel bad for the owners/trainers of Eight Belles

OJR
Missed it! We went to a picnic at ****'s Gate Park on the banks of the Snake River. It was put on by Idaho Fish & Game! Beautiful day and it was great to visit with different people and just watch the water go by!

nativetexan
You know, I read that story about Eight Belles and its really a shame. I did think the pic I saw of Big Brown running and his jockey walking off the track (kicking rocks) was kind of funny.

cinch314
That was a sad thing that happened. The filly was fine as she crossed the line but then took a bad step or stepped on a rock and BOOM down she went. It truly is a sad thing that happened but I know race horses and I also know how people prepare the tracks. It was a sad thing for sure but if you look at all 20 horses that were listed in the derby, all dated back to some kin to Native Dancer, he got hurt on the track as did Barbaro and now the filly. Native Dancer all of his protege' have the same problems. Weak legs and ankles. Sad thing indeed.
cinch314
Sorry I mistakely said that Native Dancer died on the track also but that is not true. But here is an interesting link and tells all about Native Dancer and his bloodlines and their flaws. http://forum.purseblog.com/animalicious/kentucky-derby-racings-royal-bloodline-288220.html

aksheephuntress
..Yes, I used to follow the Triple Crown pretty close, years ago....and cherished my 4 visits to the Kentucky Horse Park when I was little....never forgot Man O' War's grave, and the outside display markers of just how large his stride was... -I worked for a while at this one barn in Indiana and put pre-track training on those young thoroughbreds...just broke my heart to see them started so young...that , in my opinion, has been the biggest contributer to unnessessary snapped pasterns, quarter cracks, navicular disease, bowed tendons, and shin splints.... just a crying shame. boonencricket
Watch it every year, the first Saturday in May is almost a holiday here in KY. Derby parties on every corner with cold beer and good friends.
