Strut10
What a beautiful day to burn large charges of smokeless and toss huge bullets downrange at absurd velocities. The 6 participants in the '08 OTPG Spring Lead Fling met at Fire Mountain buffet in Indiana, PA at 11:00 for the pre-shoot Flingfeast. Ate like pigs, we did. Clockwise from front left: myself, PA Ridge Runner, PA Spike King, Snapper, Pudd and friend-of-the-OTPG Uncle John. After lunch we took the ride out to the range at the Strut10 Ranch. Weather was cool but warming, windy and sunny. Very shortly after our arrival at the range.......the cases containing mudhole stompers, one by one, began to open for eager eyes and twitching trigger fingers to appreciate. First up, Snapper sends a 150 gr. downrange at about 3400 fps as PA Spike King and PA Ridge runner look on. Here, Pudd snuggles up to his .416 Rigby T/C Encore for a 400 grain kiss. PA Ridge Runner shows us how a southpaw does with a rightie rifle (Snapper's beautiful Weatherby Mark V Deluxe in .300 Wby Mag). He did a danged fine job of running the gun "backwards", I might add. Uncle John explained what 100 grains of H-1000 does when lit behind a 225 gr. Hornady in his .338 Remington Ultra Mag. We discovered that this load combination is sufficient to break a claybird to at least 300 yards. Here, PA Spike King prepares to loosen 5200 ft/lbs of .375 Wby Mag at the target board. Spike King demonstrated that proper form allows a fellow to uncork a serious mudhole stomper and , in fact, not only live to tell about it, but to have another shot. And here's yours truly, lining up my 7mm STW, preparing to give a 130 gr. Sierra Match King a 3650 fps boot downrange. Don'tcha just love that hint of burned Reloader22 wafting on the country breeze?? All in all we had as much fun as 6 guys can legally have on a Sunday afternoon. We shot 100 and 300 yards today. Due to the wind conditions, the 600 yard bench was left un-used this time. But no matter. The food was good and plenty. The fellowship was top notch. And the fire-breathing, mudhole-stomping OTPG rifles were belching mightily. Hopefully the next OTPG shooting event will draw a larger attendance. Until a guy (or gal) sits down and spends some quality time on the ultra-high performance side of the shooting world it's kinda like the proverbial "Jeep thing"................they just won't understand. JJL
Another job well done by the OTPG. I'm glad to see that there were NO detached retinas - seperated shoulders - or ruptured eardrums.
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
Strut could not have said it any better. After meeting the esteemed Mr Pudd in the parking lot when he walked over to introduce himself I just knew that this was going to be good. Then the rest of the gang showed up and we immediately got to work. At the resteraunt that is. After the waiters first question of "what is OTPG?" and receiving an answer and acting a little like he had just shot pudds .416 we told him that we would behave, to a point, if we got fed real good. Well the waiter, and resteraunt lived up to their reputation and we tried our best to live up to ours. Yep it was a real magnum meal. What truly amazes me is when meeting up for the first time face to face a gang of like minded folks can act like it was another of a long line of get togethers and a couple of newcomers can fit in just like they had been to all the previous meetings. When it came to the shooting of really big thunder sticks these folks generousity knew no limits. No one was excluded from trying any rifle there. I did refrain from the .416 rigby but only because of the stock configuration was definately against a lefty approach and I was not comfortable shooting such a thunder stick from my other side. A whole bunch of fun was had and most of all new friendships were kindled. As a newcomer to the fling I can attest that these OTPG hardcores are ready to welcome any and all to our next fling. They are just like the rest of society cept there is a little more, well much more thunder in their sticks. Thanks again for treating us to a great afternoon. snapper
Great time indeed...just not enough time in a day! Its really cool to meet some folks face to face for the first time and feel like you've known them all your life. Only one thing that stunk on that day...the one brave ground hog that came acrossed the range (yes, accrossed the range) made it before anyone could get a gun ready. He was moving at a little faster pace then any ground hog I ever seen move! Good times...can't wait for the 2 annual fall blast off.

He was moving at a little faster pace then any ground hog I ever seen move! He took a bet from the other groundhogs and won!

hangunnr
Well Spike King, I don't know about 300's out of Dons 375 but I know you'll be able to run some 500's out of my 458WM if you want to... There aint much that'll compare to launching 500grs at 1800fps out of a handgun......or rifle for that matter... Wish I could of been there to meet y'all. Looks like you guys had fun. hangunnr
PA_Spike_King
Hangunnr I just threw a number out there lol. Yeah Pudd wanted me to shoot his 416 but with it being a thumbhole stock and I shoot the right way (lefty) I didn't feel comfortable enough to shoot it his way. LOL Yeah Snapper,Pudd and I talked about you yesterday (were your ears ringing) it was all good. I sure hope to get to meet more people from this site on the next OTPG outing. Strut10
looks like you guys had LOTS of fun You, sir, are correct. The magnitude of the monstrous unleashing of firepower downrange was only surpassed by the quality of the camaraderie enjoyed by all in attendance. bluelund79
I heard something about a fall run? My little brother will be graduating from Basic Training in KY this Sept....Maybe I should throw the 300 Win Mag in the truck, if its about the same time frame?! Maybe I'll have that CZ in .404 Jeffrey by then....Been eyeing the CZ in .458 Win Mag that is at the local Gander as well, but I really want that nostalgic .404 Jeffrey...Maybe I'd even look for the .405 Winchester though, too many tough decisions for now, and that stimulous check goes to me....Had to give up part of my re-enlistment bonus to my better half. Looks like you all had a great time and I hope I get the chance to meet you all in the future, Eric
Strut10
I heard something about a fall run? You heard right. The 2nd annual OTPG Blast Off should happen on a Sunday somewheres around the 1st of November. A .404 Jeff oughta fit in nicely.

Strut10
if your guns wernt so big, maybe you could get them ready in time At 8 1/2 lbs. my .375 Whomperby snaps briskly to the shoulder. I am, however, a tad embarrassed to admit that, to date, my farthest groundhog kill with it was only 275 yards.
