I use 10-10-10 or whatever I have handy. Feeder roots will be mostly under the 'drip line' of the foliage. Spread it around under the tree. A few handfuls for christmas-tree sizes works well.

Spruces like acidic ferts. Most evergreen and rhody food has acid. Not totally necessary but it helps.

The middle # (phosporus) helps bring out the color if they are blues so if you can find a high phos blend it'll be better. A good fert for trees & shrubs is organic fert derived from chicken SHITE. I use Rich Lawn - Pro Rich on my organic customers. The stuff is fantastic. High in phosporus to help blooming plants and to bring out color. 6 inchers would get about a half a coffee can (3-4) handfulls spread around the dripline. Do it 2-3 times per year, a little heavier in the fall to promote root growth. Organics are great as they are very stable and stick around a long time. Synthetics will be used up much quicker and will leach through. Good luck.
