aksheephuntress
Always good to get the little ones invovled. The sooner the better. How were the skulls cleaned ? ...yeah, I was tired when I posted these last night...and figured I'd come back later to add some details... -First of all...the Kodiak Brown Bear skull was not done by us...I wanted to add that to the picture, since it is such an awesome skull...and is pretty incredible to see the size difference against the others!-it scored 28 and 4/16 B&C.-I did do a massive repair job on one of the canine teeth 2 years ago, when we were showing it to a friend of ours, and she forgot the skull detatched...and she DROPPED it..-it shattered in a hundred pieces(the tooth)-and I painstakingly found them accross the floor, pieced them together, and glued and re-shelaqued it. -The other skulls(2 black bear, 2 wolf, beaver, wolverine, and lynx skull)the kids and I did.. -We have them frozen until we're ready to work on one... -then simmer in a crock pot(I have a second one for this...)...or on top a hot plate in a big pot....until all the meat really falls off it..-have to keep changing the water, or the skulls can get discolored... -then peeling, scraping the meat off clean....jed likes to take a nail or spike to stir up and pull out the brain material- -one more simmer period (shorter) in the crock pot-with diluted bleach... -then rinsing , and blowing out all the nerve tissue out of the narrow caveties with the pressure air hose- ...keeping track of the teeth during the simmering process has been a little tricky...and in the pics you can see where we are with the lynx skull, on that board...with all the teeth sitting on the marked paper- -we try to fit the right teeth in their corresponding spots while still wet-using epoxy- -then, shelaque later.... -we tried one of the martin skulls a few months ago...but it fell apart- -we are currently doing a Mtn goat skull... I want to take a better picture of this...I just tried to fit too much into the pictures...and my composition isn't right... -Very educational for the kids!-and me,too! Who gives a crap about composition Don't be so hard on yourself. That's an awesome collection Kathleen, and a lot of dedication. Great educational tool for the kids too, in a lot of different ways. You know you're on thin ice when a woman starts using big words like benevolent in a sentence addressed to a man. :D:p
