wtnhunt
Where do you start with negotiations? Here is an example Tradin Value-$6,442 Private Party Value-$7,771 Dealer Retail Value -$8,911 How low should the first offer be? Car buying tips and tricks appreciated!! 05 neon 55000 miles Do not be afraid to make your offer and walk away. In my opinion the dealer is asking way too much, probably a waste of your time to think you are going to talk them down to a reasonable buy, but you could try. If you really want the car, might try starting out at $6,000 as suggested, do not offer to raise to what you are willing to give. Do a little research and see what the same car is going for in your area. Always helps to know as much as you can.
1997xltlimited
for the same car that is about average if not a little better than what other dealers are asking for the same car what does everybody think a reasonable buy would be here? wtnhunt
Just looked real quick, not sure what options you plugged in for the car, but what I am seeing in good condition on a 4 door neon with 55,000 miles in this area is more like $3800 trade in. Can not say what a reasonable buy would be without knowing the options. Based on what I see here, a reasonable buy would be around $4000-$5000 depending on options and condition. Shawn
im just going to assume the car is load with power locks, windows etc and ac. Honeslty me personally i wouldnt go higher than 5500 on a vehicle that small. if anything i rather take the 5500 and put it down on a better economy vehicle thats brand new than a neon. 1997xltlimited
yes it has almost all the options, so a good buy from a dealer would be the trade in value and not the retail from a dealer value
OJR
Forget the "retail" value! Max out at $6,000.00! If they don't come down, walk out the door! There are all sorts of used cars around and don't get hung up on just one of them!
Shaun_300
I just checked autotrader in this area and there's quite a few 04-05 Neons with around the same mileage or less going for around $6500, and you have to remember that cars in Canada are usually more expensive than in the States. Always start low and work your way up. Don't be afraid to pull a few tricks out of your sleeve too, like by saying you found a car at different place, or private sale going for what you're offering or less. stevebeilgard
i'd check ebay and autotrader.com the big thing to remember is that you were looking for a vehicle when you found that one. don't hesitate to keep looking. car salesmen ply on the "gotta have it" syndrome. don't get caught in it. QDMAworks4me
I have always been told that if the person who buys the car is happy with the deal and the person who sold the car is happy then it was a good deal all the way around. I think it depends on what YOU want to spend and not so much on what everyone else would spend. Neons have come a long ways since they were first made and some people still think of them as they were first made which was no where near what they are today. If you would like a small car like that you might want to check out the chevy aveo, a guy at work here just bought one for 9000 brand new after rebates, that included tax and title. It gets around 38 mpg and has a 5 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Just a thought for you. Good luck, I hate car shopping!!
bfletch7441
The key is that if the dealer is expecting you to pay retail price, they should give you retail value for your trade in. If they want to give you trade in value for your trade, make sure you only pay trade in value for the new vehicle. Ben
Dubie
I wouldn't go over 6000-6500 myself. When you start talking little cars, you can get brand new for just a little bit more, and better warrenty coverage. Oh, and don't buy into those third party warrenty companies. For the ammount you spend for a year or two of coverage, you might as well buy a couple of parts and get your hands greasey. Also, they'll void you for the most minor infractions. If you don't stop on the highway at exactly 3000 miles and change your oil, they'll cancel. My younger brother just learned this lesson.
