Ethan Givan
Just wondering how many of you guys bait deer for hunting. This doesnt include food plots. Corn piles, feeders, or something else you put out to attract them into range. I personally do not bait deer. I hunt them over natural food sources. Just wanted to see how many do this. Ravin R10 man
I do,and have no problem with it if legal where you hunt. I beleive there is no diff. between plots or a farm field..man put those in too...also have no problem hunting that...I also hunt natural feed. (ie),. acorns..any tool that I can use to my advantage, if legal I'll use.
Chrud
Corn piles, feeders, or something else you put out to attract them into range. Do you use deer calls, rattling horns or scents/lures? I consider all those bait also.
sskybnd
if food plots, piles of corn, and feeders aren't included in baiting deer, i use them all, becouse its legal here. could you tell me what you mean by baiting deer, or what you would use to bait deer. HOYTnMUZZYboy
illegal to use bait piles of any kind in Illinois, I do hunt a few food plots, and use grunt calls. Use the farmers corn and beans to the best of my advantage.
wtnhunt
Nope, no baiting here. Have used corn at cams in the off season though.
Tominator
Yeah, on occasion, but must say I've never had any hunting success with it. The deer typically eat the leftover apples, carrots or corn at night.
ruttinbuc
No. I tried it when NJ legalized it. Too darn expensive in the long run. Shot a nice buck at a crabapple tree I helped along.
Texan_Til_I_Die
On the ranch I hunt we have 7 free choice protein feeders and about 15 timed corn feeders. We don't typically hunt the protein feeders, but the corn feeders are an excellent tool for herd management. A lot of the does and many of the 1.5 and 2.5 year old bucks will hit the corn feeders during legal shooting hours, so this presents a great opportunity to harvest does and bucks that are carrying undesirable antler traits. I rarely see any bucks older than 2.5 coming to the feeders to eat. During the rut, an older buck may occasionally troll by and check out any does that are around, but they never stop to eat. Texan_Til_I_Die
Oh yeah, I might add that along with the protein feeders and corn feeders, we also have 600 acres of food plots.

Ethan Givan
Im only talking about food attractants, not calls. I dont consider using food plots as baiting either. I consider baiting to mean, taking something out into the woods that would not naturally occur in that area, and placing it there to attract the deer to eat. Examples... Corn piles, C'mere Deer, apples, oats ect. I use calls, and food plots but I dont BAIT deer, even though it is legal in Kentucky.

I consider baiting to mean, taking something out into the woods that would not naturally occur in that area, and placing or using it there to attract the deer. This includes my man-made deer call, my deer scents, that have been strategically placed, my man-made decoy, and anything that I may actually bring with me or place before hand to attract deer. As long as it is legal, then I don't see a problem. Using a man-made deer call - is not a natural occurrence, unless you want to view be blowing on a plastic gismo in wait for a deer as natural . Using bottled scent - is not natural, because I put it where "I" want it to go, not where the deer may urinate naturally. Same with decoys, corn, etc I think it's terrible, that hunters have to split hairs about this topic, just because they don't do one thing or the other where they hunt. It's a legal personal choice. The_Kat
One of my favorite things to establish deer in a new spot is to use corn piles. It works very well! But ya best be ready to feed the coons and birds too....they sure help themselves
Mirage
I use bait here in florida but do not in maryland. I see both sides and I think we as hunters should use our advantages to our favor!

Guest b&c191
Sure, we put out corn and rice bran. Works well until the acorns start falling. The deer will get back on the feed about mid Dec.
Ethan Givan
You guys are thinking too hard about this. I simply stated FOOD ATTRACTANTS for the deer to EAT. Calls have nothing to do with eating. Decoys dont either. Think food... whether it smells like food... or is food for the deer. This is what I wanted to know. Im not against baiting either. I just dont do it. I just wanted to know how many of you did.
buckee
I use vanilla and other cool scents sometimes, and I also use apple scent on my jacket. That's the same as baiting, because it is the smell of a food attractant . I had a little spike last year that came to visit me on a few occasions. I think he wanted a bite out of me...LOL I use both food smells and sex smells in the rut. It appeals to both of their senses. Whatever makes them curious.
