craig mack
How far will you shoot? I shot my first bird this year at 40 yards and just before I shot I was thinking this might be too far. Lucky for me it wasnt. But I dont think I could go any farther than that.
wtnhunt
Only bird I have killed so far was barely over 40 if I remember right. My winchester 1300 patterns pretty good out to 50, I would probably take a shot on a bird at 50, but I think that is probably the max. PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I use a win 1300 with a .655 comp-n-choke and 3 in mag #6 shot. I have shot as far as 55 yds and connected. After that though I made a decision that 40 yds will be my max distance. Now the closest I have shot is somewhere between 15 and 20 yds. Remember when you use a very tight choke you should have sights of some sort so you can aim that shotgun like a rifle. You also need to take a patterning shot at real close range to know how to aim both up close and farther.
GobblerBuster618
i will not shoot further than 40 yards. to me turkey hunting is a sport where the closer the better. I believe at 40 yards the turkey has been worked close enough for a shot. But i havent shot anything beyone 30. killed on this past weekend at 15 yards and the other this year at 20. huntinguide
45-50 ill take a shot, have killed out to 62 but miss judged the distance
pointing_dogs_rule
with the bow it's 20 yards & with the gun it's 20 yards. What can I say I just like to see the show that they put on and of course, how close I can get them into me. "it's not about how far, it's about how close" good luck to all the dog
bluelund79
40 yards is my self-imposed max range....got mine at 13, almost too close but the results were awesome! First bird for me, and it definitely won't be the last!
Strut10
40 and under. 4 of my guns could reliably kill to 60 or beyond. My personal preference is 25-30. 40 is my max. If I can't call him any closer than that.....then I have not sufficiently beaten the bird and will not shoot. My average over the last almost 30 years is 28 1/4 yards. Nut
30 yards
The Kid
i've only shot a bird at 50, but my uncle shot one at 68 paces with his ten gauge
Ambuscher
30 yards
Adjam5
40 is my comfort zone, but I feel mighty confidant with them 3 1/2's at 50 yards.
2labs
My max range is 35yds, I could shoot to 40 but wont!!
RangerClay
I've tested mine to 40 yards. That is far enough for me.
Leo
If it's inside 55yds I can pull the trigger with confidence. Bang! Dead bird! I've patterned, I've shot birds this far I know my gun will do it. I prefer 30 to 40 yards but what I prefer has nothing to do with what actually happens. I've gotten them in much much closer. I really DON'T like a 10yd shot at a gobbler with a shotgun. I can do it but the results are UGLY. When every single pellet and the wad itself connects with the bird, it's messy, nuff said. For the true 50 yd hangers the only way you're getting that bird is with a gun that will do it. I've had more than enough experiences with these types of birds to have this hammered into my head with concrete emphasis. If I can get him closer I do, but if it's one of those rascals that hangs and hangs and hangs and hangs... I gotta surprise for him!
gobblerroller
my first turkey was 39 yards with a 12 gauge
HuntnMa
i could probably kill a bird @ 50 yds. but i wont go over 30-35 yds. just because i want him as close as possible....its not that i am not capable or my gun isn't capable, it's the fact that i want to see every possible second before the shot. bluedog
30 yards for me. I'm another one that loves that saying about "it's not about how far, but how close". I love it when they close up and personal.
5SHOT
I would like to keep it under 40 if I can but would shoot at 45-50 if I had to. The farthest I have shot is 46 yards. Took him down no probelm but too much can go wrong at that distance.
redbeard
40 is good for me. It's the close ones, 10 yards or less that give me a problem.
toddyboman
40-50 yards never shot past 30 however
Indy-Travis
My gun is a reliable 45-50 yard gun, but I have only shot 2 birds beyond 40, and both were mis-judged yardage. I try to stick to a 35-40 yard max, and typically, if a bird is coming that close, you can let him get closer. I shot 4 this year with the longest being 24-25 yards, and the shortest being 7 yards (too close actually). I like to shoot them in the 20-30 yard range.
