thehunter
Am in process of piecing together a black bear hunt-at least a year out to give myself time to do it right. Want to go with a guided hunt in either VA or TN. My question-what's the minimum caliber rifle I'll need to get the job done? This is no pipe dream. I do want to do this!! aksheephuntress
...I would at least take a black bear with a .30-06 (220 grn)...or even a .338- -shot placement is the most important, with bear hunting, I feel....
wyohunter
30 caliber .... you pick which one
fly
I've asked this question before and came to the conclusion that a 30/30 would be the minimum. I personally am not comfortable with this. I prefer something larger just in case I run across of large 400lb+ bear. I purchased a Remington 300 ultra mag. Remingtom sells ammo that has varying levels of power. You can use the rifle for smaller big game such as deer to larger big game such as moose, bear and elk. Make sure you actually speak with outfitter references before booking. wtail
Ive guided alot of bear hunters over the years and if you are planning to hunt over bait any calibre will work, but if you are going to spot and stalk take somthing big enough to knock the front shoulders out.(3o-o6& up)a bear with out front shoulders is not getting away. Swamphunter
I like bear hunting better than whitetails....
Dubie
Depends, like said above.. Over bait at close range, just about any gun in your cabinet will do the job. Spot and stalk with longer and trickier shots, I'd select something off of the OTPG list.
