Guest gyrene
I and my hunting partner just bought new Monarch scopes to mount on new Savage 270 WSM's. Both identical scopes would not group or perform with adjustments. We put Federal and Winchester factory ammo 130 grain premium ammo through the rifles with dismal results. We have returned our scopes to Nikon for repairs. I own another Nikon mounted on my Remington .308 and love it. Has anyone had or heard of similar problems with the Monarch series and possible causes?
wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. Have a few nikon monarch scopes and buckmaster scopes, and have had absolutely no issues with them holding zeroes at all. Had not heard of any such issues either. Texan_Til_I_Die
Welcome aboard. Just curious about the process you went through to determine that it was a scope problem?
fly
I can shoot a dime every time at 50 yards with my Nikon buckmaster. This is the first I've heard of problems with the monarch.

ThethirdI
It sounds like your rifles don't like the ammo or maybe you somehow wound up with a bad lot #. I've got a couple of rifles that will only shoot one particular round consistently. One is a muzzle loader and the other is a 7mm. They are both deadly accurate, but only with the rounds that they like going through them. If the two of you were shooting the same lot of ammo I'm not so sure that scopes are your problem. Still yet it seems odd that you would both have the problem.
JJL
I found I was alot better shooter than I thought I was when I dumped all of my Simmons / Nikon / and Leupold scopes and put Zeiss on top. I just wish I had the cash for Swarovski or Schmidt-Bender.

stevebeilgard
i've had pretty dismal experience with nicon in general. i like leupold, but zeiss is my optic of choice.
johnf
I've always had great luck with Nikon. I would guess there is a mounting, or ammo problem.
bigmoss
Nikon is all I own, scopes, Binos, spotters, range finders and have never had an issue yet
Leo
Seriously, Nikon Monarchs are decent scopes. If you have issues I would be more inclined to suspect the rifle or the mounts. Emphasis on the mounts. Bad mounts can make a perfectly functioning optic appear to behave like JUNK! Skimping on the mounts is a major error. They make look alright feel alright but when you swap them out be prepared for a surprise! If you set another scope that you know works in the same mounts with the same results. Consider changing the mounts.
Deb
I don't know about the scopes, but the new Nikon binos are made in China, now...............
elnor
I bought a new Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 last month to replace a cheapo scope on a Winchester M70 300WSM. Just as important as the scope itself, I bought Leupold dovetail rings/bases to keep the scope locked up where it's supposed to be. (The old scope and mounts wouldn't hold their zero, I assume because they just weren't up to the repeated pounding from 300WSM recoil.) I shot my M70 far better on the first day I went to the range to sight-in the new setup than I ever had before. I have nothing but good things to report on the scope or the rings and bases. As others have said, perhaps it's a mounting and/or ammo issue(?). What sort of rings/bases did you use? Maybe you could recheck that all of the screws are tight and everything's locked down good, verify you have a dead rest, and try 2-3 other kinds of ammo and report back how they performed? Hopefully with a snug attachment and by trying some diff ammo you can get this problem sorted out; I certainly love the brightness and eye relief on my Monarch. WaCoyote
I don't even believe the story. 2 scopes? 2 different guns? Both bad and had to be sent back? I wouldn't believe it with any reputable brand and I don't believe this one.
unioncountyslayer
Might be the Savage, not the Nikon.
