Turkeygirl
No kidding either:rolleyes: I'll start at the beginning. I get up to the state land about quarter to 5, as I drive past the area where I got my gobbler Tuesday, a little voice says go here but I go no, I'm going to try a different spot. I park at the gated road that leads down to the back of camp, hike down in and sit. A little bit before it gets light out, I hear a gobble. I stand up and get ready to move, waiting to hear it. I hear it again and start moving that way. I am able to find our one trail and I hear another, different gobble way down in the woods to my right. I keep going towards this one, he didn't sound too far then I bump a few turkeys off their roost. I thought they were hens but maybe it was one of the first gobblers I heard. Well I wait a minute and hear another gobble, I head towards it, later thinking this was a different turkey possibly all together. I get about 100 yards or so from this bird. It's light out, I have no choice but to sit on the side of this ridge, which was the ridge I shot my gobbler off of. This bird did not stop gobbling and when I gave him some yelps, clucks, and/or purrs, he hammered right back, but wouldn't fly down. He was on his roost gobbling from at least quarter after 5 until 6:45am. Well around 6:30am, I hear cluck cluck to my left...there's a fat old hen standing 10 yards from me. STINKER! I wave my hands at her trying to spook her off, I wave a tree branch...finally I decide I'll crawl towards this one tree I wanted to go to anyway and maybe she'll go off. Nope! He's gobbling, she's walking towards him and I'm crawling on my hands and knees literally racing her up the hill!:D I stop at my tree and she just walks on past me like "what a loser":D She disappears in the woods up by the gobbler and I think I hear him hit the ground...and nothing. I decide to circle around the ridge and get up on top..it's nice and open and lots of oaks and old scratchings. I get settled in a natural brush blind. What do ya know, somewhere up towards the road closer is a hen yelping..no not real, I think it was someone else. They sure as heck would not quit either....probably over doing a little. I decide to move across the ridge and set up towards where he was roosted. I grab my decoy, start walking and low and behold a hunter appears down in the woods. He waves, I wave back, turn around and head back. ARGH! No one was there when I drove in....these guys are so lame, I don't think they come in until it gets light out. I think the hen took the gobbler off, but I guess there's the chance one of those idiots spooked him...I don't know. So will the gobbler be back? Should I get back in there tomorrow morning bright and early? If the weather is ok tonight, I'll try and roost them. I was also wondering, would putting my jake decoy with my hen decoy help at all? Bet none of you ever raced a hen:D:D

3seasons
If the other hunter heard the bird then you can bet that they will be back in there in the morning also, whether you are there are not. Some people just don’t care. I would try to roost him if at all possible then I would get in there in the morning early and set up. Try to get him off the roost, but sounds like the way he’s acting (waiting for the hen to come to him) he might be a little call shy. Id get in close and call very little and sit tight he’ll come back to check on you. I would stay quiet if you don’t do anything with him at daylight (if there is another hunter in there) but about 10am or so I would get a little more aggressive. I know down here on public land they will gobble good at daylight but when there feet hit the ground its over until about 10, that’s when most people are out of the woods. Good luck with him
Nut
Ruth, if there ever was something I wanted to see on video it would be what you did. Try it again...get there earlier and closer but I would forget about decoys on public land;).

Would have love to viewed this :D:D:D I decide to move across the ridge and set up towards where he was roosted. I grab my decoy, start walking and low and behold a hunter appears down in the woods. Kinda harsh on your fellow hunter don't you think:eek:.....I don't see where THEY did anything wrong.....Its public Land and they have just as much right to be there as you. Turkeygirl
Oooh...I was just kind of annoyed that the guys wait until it's light out and hear a gobble then come in...I actually wonder if that's why the gobbler didn't fly down was because he knew something was up.... toddyboman
He probably hung out up in the tree waiting for YOU the hen to come to him.....Then once he saw the hen he knew it would be safe to fly down........And he probably got just that since the real hen did go to him
